Couple weds at anti-war campsite

CRAWFORD, Texas The aisle was strewn with hay. A few flies buzzed around. There was no organ; the crowd hummed "Here Comes the Bride."

But Genevieve Van Cleve and Peter Ravella had their dream wedding today under a giant tent at the makeshift campsite of peace activists and military families protesting the war with Iraq.

Van Cleve said -- quote -- "We completely support what they're doing, and we just wanted to add whatever love, fidelity, loyalty and honor that we could."

....

But when they went to the campsite near President Bush's ranch last weekend, they were moved to tears after meeting parents of fallen soldiers, including Cindy Sheehan, who started the protest August Sixth and vowed to remain until Bush talked to her.

3. did these people bother to *think*?
Edited on Sun Aug-28-05 09:47 PM by enki23
this isn't a time for these idiots to be thinking about their little personal fucking moments. this is serious business, and no one who isn't ready to take it seriously should be putting themselves in front of a camera, in front of the nation, in our name.

this is NOT. ABOUT. YOU.

and you wonder why we aren't taken seriously.

5. I'm inclined to agree
I've been to far too many rallies in which some college kid decides to use the forum for his or her own pity party.

Stay on target, folks.

7. Do you know these people? Why do you swear at them and assume?
This wedding is out of love, in a loving supportive community or peace. Why do you swear at them and call them names? You should be ashamed of yourself and your assumptions.

6. Be nice DUers, I met this guy, he was very nice and excited to share this
Edited on Sun Aug-28-05 11:34 PM by uppityperson
Camp Casey community has become a very supportive community and I think it is great that they decided to share this with the others there. I wish I could have stayed and participated. He is a very nice (older than I am, I'd guess at least his 60s) gentleman who had a stroke a while back, she is from (I don't recall, but I think a country in S. America). He at least was very sweet, worked hard to prepare for the influx of people this weekend and everyone there was very happy for them. Shame on you for assuming that you know anything about them. Be nice.

Congratulations to Peter and Genevieve. May you have a peaceful and happy life together.

8. In the name of love- Nothing can be wrong.
I can see the concern from the poster above. Something just feels right to me about it, though. And your elaboration confirms it.

There is something about making this personal that does get the message across. And what could be more personal than Cindy's own son? This, after all, is about you and me. Us. Our lives, our country. And for Iraq. For everyone. Noone is excluded. That is what I believe the point is.

9. Exactly. This is about ALL OF US: Mr.bush and the Iraq occupation
This is not about Cindy. She was the galvanizing force, but this is about holding Mr.bush accountable for the Iraq occupation and demanding that it stop now. Getting married there is a wonderful thing and I think too many people are too apt to have opinions (and express them) when they are based on assumptions that are only assumptions.

Don't over react to loving things happening here. This does NOT dilute the message but sends the message that we are a peaceful loving community, sharing our joy and sorrows.

The topic is ending the Iraq occupation and holding Mr.bush accountable and we are all responsible for this.
