Senate OKs debt suspension for families of slain guardsmen

The families of National Guard members killed in the line of duty would get a six-month suspension of loan payments under a bill sent to the governor's desk Monday.

The Senate voted 33-2 to approve Assembly amendments to the bill by Sen. Nell Soto, D-Pomona, sending it to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The measure would defer for six months principal and interest payments on financial obligations incurred by the slain Guard member or his or her spouse. The deferral also would cover service and renewal charges and any fees connected to the loan or debt.

Survivors of slain Guard members receive a $12,000 death benefit. Supporters of Soto's bill said that amount is inadequate, particularly in an era when Guard members are frequently called up for fighting overseas and terms of their service are often extended.

but IIRC, a typical, full life to old age is cumulatively worth about $2,000,000.00.

What I'm recalling may have been an insurance actuary statistic.

What would be wrong with valuing life that highly? Would war become too expensive to fight if every death was accompanied by an properly valued payment?

$12,000 is an insult, a relic from a past reality long since inflated away.
