NEW YORK -- A judge ordered the Department of Defense to ask Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, naval base detainees whether they want their names to be made public.

The judge said each detainee could answer "yes" or "no" to the question of whether he wanted his identity revealed.
"One might well wonder whether the detainees share the view that keeping their identities secret is in their own best interests," he said.
He said it would be easy to find out by asking each detainee.
The judge said he will approve a final form for the question by Sept. 12 and receive a summary from the government of how the detainees responded by Oct. 7.
