U.S. says air strikes kill Iraq al Qaeda fighters

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The U.S. military said its forces killed an al Qaeda operative they named as Abu Islam and a number of fighters in air strikes at Karabila, close to Qaim, on the Syrian border on Tuesday.

"Intelligence leads Coalition forces to believe that Abu Islam and several of his associates were killed in the air strike," a spokeswoman said in Baghdad.

Earlier Arab television station Al Jazeera quoted doctors as saying at least 40 people were killed in an air strike near Qaim.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - Heavy fighting broke out in western Iraq between
pro and anti-government tribes Tuesday, leaving at least 35 people
dead from both sides, hospital officials said.

The outcome could affect the ease with which foreign extremists move
in and out of the border area.

The clashes between the pro-government Bumahl tribe and the
pro-insurgent Karabila tribe began after 2 a.m. in the western city
of Qaim near the Syrian border, said the officials at the Qaim
General Hospital. They spoke on condition of anonymity for fear
of retaliation from insurgents.

The officials said 20 members of the Bumahl tribe and 15 from Karabila
were killed in the clashes. He said dozens were also wounded.

Recent fighting in Qaim, 200 miles west of Baghdad, has left several
people killed and wounded.

BAGHDAD (AFP) - At least 56 people were killed in multiple US air strikes in Iraq against suspected Al-Qaeda hideouts near the Syrian border, an Iraqi security source said.

The attacks at dawn on Tuesday, the second such raid in less than a week, came as Sunni Arabs, believed to be the backbone of the raging insurgency, were seeking alliances to defeat Iraq's newly-drafted charter.

"At least 56 people were killed in the air strikes carried out by US forces near Qaim close to the Syrian border," the security source told AFP.

The US military said it had no exact numbers of casualties.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - U.S. F-16s launched airstrikes Tuesday near the Syrian border, destroying three houses and killing a ``known terrorist,'' the U.S. military said. Iraqi authorities said fighting had broken out in the area between a tribe that supports foreign fighters and another that backs the government.

Elsewhere, an Arab League official in Cairo said Arab diplomats were urging the Iraqis to amend their draft constitution to strengthen references to the country's role in the Arab world.

Iraqi Sunni Arabs cited the phrase among reasons they rejected the draft. Although the law forbids further changes in the draft, the stakes are so high that Iraqis may overlook legalisms in a bid for unity. A Sunni constitution negotiator urged all opponents of the constitution, including radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, to join a national front against the charter.

BAGHDAD, Aug. 30 (Xinhuanet) -- The US air strike early on Tuesday near the Iraqi western town of Qaim killed 56 civilians, said an Interior Ministry source.

"We have information that the US aircraft pounded areas near the town of Qaim near the Syrian border, destroying four houses and killing a total of 56 people," the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Sixteen people were killed in one of the houses, which was leveled in the attack, he said, adding 40 others were killed in a second house, where three families gathered.
