Poll says U.S. Sen. Nelson would easily defeat Harris in re-election bid

TALLAHASSEE -- Attorney General Charlie Crist and Chief Financial Officer Tom Gallagher are statistically even in their bid for the Republican gubernatorial nomination while U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson would defeat U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris in 2006 if that election were held today, a new poll shows.

In a survey of 1,187 registered Florida voters taken between Aug. 23-29 by the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, 57 percent said they favored Democrat Nelson in the Senate race to 33 percent for Harris, who is the only declared Republican in that race. The sample included a margin of error of plus and/or minus 2.8 percentage points.

Harris, who was Florida's secretary of state during the raucous 2000 presidential recount, was viewed unfavorably by 30 percent compared to 22 percent who saw her in a favorable light. Forty percent saw Harris as too partisan and divisive.

Nelson received a 49 percent approval rating from the respondents while Republican first-year U.S. Sen. Mel Martinez had a 45 percent job approval.

4. One thing Nelson should hype
is the fact that Republicans are going to make "illegal immigration" an issue.

With the high percentage of Hispanics and Cubans in Florida, I wonder how long it would take for them to get irked having to be asked for their "green card" - despite being legal US citizens their entire lives. Nelson should point out that Repukes are pushing the country that way . . .

5. This is a job for...Electronic Voting!!!
I guess a lot of fundies will once again come out of the woodwork to put the pug over the top. Another case that proves the inaccuracy of polling (sigh...)

7. Agreed. The pre-election polling could be 100% to 0%
and the exit polls would be 110% for Nelson, -5% for the Pug, and once the election results floated down out of cyberspace it would come out as usual, Repub 52%, Dem 48%. And the pundits would come up with their usual explanations for this amazing result, based on nothing.

Then, there would be a chorus of "Just get over it. The election's over."

And everybody would live happily ever after.

Polling means nothing anymore, neither pre-election polling nor exit polling. All that matters is how easily the machines can be hacked or patched or fraudulently programmed.
