18. I wonder what you would do if you had nothing left and your family....
...was thirsty and hungry. I am particularly interested in what advice you might give a family with very young children who will be growing weaker with each passing day.

I understand the anger against the REAL looters who are stealing TVs, microwaves, and other items that will do nothing to help anyone in New Orleans survive this disaster.

What I don't understand is the anger directed by so many against those that are trying their very best to survive in a situation that includes no running water, no electricity, very little shelter, and no other basic services. The vast majority of these people are getting absolutely NO help from anyone, and are rapidly moving toward a point of no return.

3. Martial law declared around New Orleans
NEW ORLEANS, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- Martial law was declared in New Orleans midday Tuesday as the city continued flooding from at least two levees damaged by Hurricane Katrina.

WWL-TV, New Orleans, which evacuated its studios earlier, reported airlifts of sandbags had been ordered as water flooded along the city's landmark Canal Street. No one but emergency personnel was being allowed into the city, whose two airports were under water. Looting was reported.

Mayor Ray Nagin said bodies have been seen floating in floodwaters, although neither city nor Louisiana state officials had issued a preliminary death toll.

Nagin said the city's Twin Span Bridge is "totally destroyed" and that 80 percent of the city is underwater. New Orleans is 6 feet below sea level, and reliant on levees to hold back water from Lake Ponchartrain.

He also predicted there would be no electricity in the city for four to six weeks. Natural gas leaks were also reported throughout the city, CNN reported.

8. Take prisoners? I think they might be a bit past that.
Normally in anarchic situations, looters are shot.

15. Seems as if some are just too materialistic to have a heart.....
...or a mind to wrap around the severity of what those people are dealing with...and untill they can literally be put in the same situation then they shouldn't have an opinion especially on that condones killing for the sake of killing...all that STUFF down in New Orleans will be a rotten ruin and written completely off as a loss regardless if it sits in those stores or taken and used by those poor people left to rot with the pollution...alligators...water moccisans...even sharks swimming through what was once their city...and in my humble opinion...it's survival instinct setting in on top of complete shock of what's happening to them...if they want to attempt to compile some sort of semblence of having something...when the gov'ts aren't takin' care of them properly...I say more power to 'em...take what you can get before you die from the lack of basic necessity.

16. Private homes are also being looted
As well as shops that don't sell anything needed for survival.

But the looters must be poor people, so they have an excuse. What about the majority of poor people--who aren't looting? And the poor who are victims, as well.

Hey--anyone who burglarizes your home may well belong to a less advantaged socioeconomic group. So, if you arrive home some day to find your PC & any other electronics gone, you'll be OK with it!

17. Agreed, There's no excuse for breaking into homes of other victims
Once you start capitalizing off other victims of a disaster by taking another homeowner's property you are nothing but a parasite.

I feel that anyone who thinks it's acceptable for someone to loot someone else home should refrain from telling others to STFU(as one poster so delicately told another) unless they are willing to pack up all of their belongings this moment and donate everything to an aid agency that can deliver those items to someone in need.

19. FUCK YES....I'd still be alive wouldn't I?
.....STUFF can be replaced and if it can't then I guess I didn't need it that bad in the first place...as long as I'm ALIVE then the potential is there for replacement of THINGS...I'll say this as many times as need be....until you're in the same perdicament these panic stricken...deseprate people are in...don't judge or assume what you'd do in the same situation...we're all animals deep down regardless of any high and mighty education when put in survival situations...all logic leaves you and instinct takes over.

21. I don't think anyone here supports looting of the type you describe....
...in your post.

But what about the vast majority of people that are receiving absolutely NO help from anyone? They're trying to survive in an environment that includes no electricity, no running water, no food, and no other basic services. How do they keep themselves and their families alive?

Here's the bottomline, IMHO...knowing the raidly deteriorating situation in New Orleans like I think most of us do, if you see a person coming out of a food store with food and water, would you shoot them?

23. The bottom line is not those looting food & water....
It is those looting homes & shops that don't sell "necessities."

Watching WWL yesterday, I saw interviews with refugees. One man had a house on Canal, but stayed in the projects for the storm. Details were not given--but that's apparently where his children live. After the storm, as flood waters were rising, they realized they needed to do something.

He & others blew up the children's wading pools & made "boats." Then the7 moved everyone to the nearest dry piece of freeway. Several trips were necessary. Finally choppers showed up.

These people showed bravery & resourcefulness in keeping their families alive. Without stealing.

24. I have no problem with people raiding stores for essentials
I understand that they need to survive and at least stores are covered to replace loses of that nature.

I'll even go so far as to say that it should be their duty to salvage as much food- and water supplies as possible. Especially canned food and bottled water as their content is relatively well protected.
In the long run this can only be positive for the survival chances of those struck by this disaster and ease the aid-effort.

just my two cents.

13. For all the good that will do
There aren't enough forces there to enforce it. National Guard should have been ready to go way before now. The ones that aren't already in Iraq, that is. I doubt Bush will be calling those guys home to help out here.
