Papers hail heroes but blast Bush

Even as US newspapers report the unfolding disaster in New Orleans and the US Gulf Coast following Hurricane Katrina, some are apportioning blame for the extent of the devastation.

The Washington Post says

...

"A huge chunk of America's heritage - the remnants of what was once France's largest North American colony, a Creole culture unique on this continent - is in severe jeopardy," it says.

It, too, praises "admirable" heroism and generosity in response to the catastrophe.

Other papers are more scathing.

"George W Bush gave one of the worst speeches of his life yesterday," says the New York Times in an editorial.

"And nothing about the president's demeanour yesterday - which seemed casual to the point of carelessness - suggested that he understood the depth of the current crisis."

58% of the American people opposed the Iraq war BEFORE the invasion. Feb. '03. I'll never forget that stat. Before all the lies were exposed; before the full horror and costs of it were known. Across the board in all polls. 58%! That number dipped only once, during the few weeks of the invasion with U.S. troops at max risk, then went right back up to nearly 60%, where it stayed throughout the presidential campaign. It's over 70% today. The American people have NEVER supported this war.

And if you look at the issue polls over the last year, you find that the great majority of Americans oppose every major Bush policy, foreign and domestic, way up in the 60% to 70% range. You name it. The Iraq war. Torture policy. Social Security. The deficit. Women's rights. It's amazing, really.

And on top of this are Bush's approval rating polls, so low leading up to the election that Zogby said he couldn't win--at a miserable 49% on the very day of his inauguration (unprecedented for recently reelected, 2nd term president) and now sunk to the low 30s.

And on top of that, the exit polls on election day, saying Kerry won--falsified by the TV news monopolies on election night, who "adjusted" their exit polls (Kerry won) to fit the "official tally" coming from Diebold's and ES&S's SECRET, PROPRIETARY vote tabulation formulae (Bush won).

The American people are not stupid, and they are not "sheeple." What they are is disempowered and DISENFRANCHISED.
