NEW ORLEANS — With thousands feared drowned in what could be America's deadliest natural disaster in a century, New Orleans' leaders all but surrendered the streets to floodwaters Wednesday and began turning out the lights on the ruined city - perhaps for months.

Looting spiraled so out of control that Mayor Ray Nagin ordered virtually the entire police force to abandon search-and-rescue efforts and focus on the brazen packs of thieves who have turned increasingly hostile.

The police are not trying to protect the Department Stores. There are gangs roving around the city not just looting but robbing citizens of thier food and water as well as ransacking homes. People who survived the huricane and the flooding are now being shot and murdered by these thugs. Don't blame the N.O. police department for trying to do thier job. Many of them have lost loved ones as well as their homes.

I honestly don't understand why we have to make a big deal of all of this looting, most of the things that people are looting probably won't work (ie tv's and electronics) because of the water damage that they have recieved... also, it's not like these people are going to be able to get these stolen goods very far... also let's just leave alone those who are just trying to survive by finding food... The food that they are looting probably won't be good in a few days anyways... This is such a tragedy that we should focus on the people who need help... not the looters

7. The looting is economically insignificant...

Compared with the destruction from the hurricane and flooding itself, the looting is not even on the map.

A co-worker had an interesting point: the "authorities" are concerned about looting not because it is a public safety issue or even property rights issue at this point, but rather because they are trying to maintain the "moral authority" of the governmental power. I agree. They cannot tolerate a detioration of respect for authority in general.

I've practically screamed myself hoarse pointing out that all that stuff being looted is ultimately toast anyway.

I have family down there, and we don't know where they are, or whether they're alive. And I just can't quite believe that defending TVs in WalMart could EVER be considered higher priority than saving people's lives. So you're probably right: the real priority of the government is making sure its authority remains absolutely unchallenged -- and if that means letting people drown, then that's fine with them.
