Gunmen target medical convoy
New Orleans mayor issues 'desperate SOS'

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CNN) -- New Orleans' Charity Hospital halted efforts to evacuate its patients after it came under sniper fire, according to Dr. Tyler Curiel, who witnessed the incidents.

The attack came as New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin issued "a desperate SOS" for the thousands of people stranded in an around the city's convention center with no food or water and fading hope.

Curiel and his National Guard escorts, were returning to the hospital after dropping off patients at nearby Tulane Medical Center, when someone started shooting at their convoy of Humvees.

"We were coming in from a parking deck at Tulane Medical Center, and a guy in a white shirt started firing at us," Curiel said. "The National Guard (troops), wearing flak jackets, tried to get a bead on this guy. "

7. It is very telling....
CNN reported that the witness said it look like one guy on a building maybe in a white shirt.

But the attempt by some to keep the conversation here focused away from the 1000's that need help and are being ignored is very telling indeed.

And to even attempt to paint these obviously isolated incidents as being representative of most if not all of the affected people.

You can't dance around it, for example: the white people find food at the grocery store and black boy loots food at the grocery store articles.

You have to wonder if the media was not full of faces of black and poor families experiencing this devastation what would be their reactions?

But, I think most already know from past conversations with these same posters.

19. Yes!
We need to

1) roll back Bush's tax cuts
2) reinstate the CCC to rebuild the city and the surrounding area.

This is what Democrats do best.

16. Fights and gunfire break out as New Orleans slips into anarchy; mayor issu
NEW ORLEANS - Storm victims were raped and beaten, fights and fires broke out, corpses lay out in the open, and rescue helicopters and law enforcement officers were shot at as hurricane-flooded New Orleans descended into anarchy Thursday. "This is a desperate SOS," the mayor said.

Anger mounted across the ruined city, with thousands of Hurricane Katrina victims increasingly hungry, desperate and tired of waiting for buses to take them out.

"We are out here like pure animals. We don't have help," the Rev. Issac Clark, 68, said outside the New Orleans Convention Center, where corpses lay in the open and the and other evacuees complained that they were dropped off and given nothing - no food, no water, no medicine.

About 15,000 to 20,000 people who had taken shelter at the convention center to await buses grew increasingly hostile. Police Chief Eddie Compass said he sent in 88 officers to quell the situation at the building, but they were quickly beaten back by an angry mob.

"We have individuals who are getting raped, we have individuals who are getting beaten," Compass said. "Tourists are walking in that direction and they are getting preyed upon."

In hopes of defusing the unrest at the convention center, Mayor Ray Nagin gave the refugees permission to march across a bridge to the city's unflooded west bank for whatever relief they can find. But the bedlam at the appeared to make leaving difficult.

20. Police Chief Says Thousands Trapped in New Orleans Convention Center
The New Orleans police chief says 15-thousand people are trapped in the city's convention center. And he says some are being raped and beaten.

Chief Eddie Compass says displaced tourists are "walking in that direction and they are getting preyed upon."

Compass said he sent eight eleven-man teams into the convention center. But as soon as the first team arrived, he said, "they were beaten back within 30 feet of the entrance."

Earlier, the city's mayor issued a "desperate SOS" on behalf of the thousands who are stranded at the convention center.

34. Yes and on CNN
Paula Zahn was totally pissed when the FEMA director said the federal government didn't know till today that these people were there. She came back and said did you really say that you didn't KNOW they were there? He said yes. Can you believe that? It's been on the news and it was designated as a disaster center, how the fuck did they not know it was there. The level of incompetance is profound.

25. The cops have no working radios....
From the story:

"But officers told CNN they lacked manpower and steady communications to properly do their jobs -- and that they needed help to prevent the widespread looting and violence now prevalent in the city.
A police officer working in downtown New Orleans said police were siphoning gas from abandoned vehicles in an effort to keep their squad cars running.
The officer said police are "on their own" for food and water, scrounging up what they can from anybody who is generous enough to give them some -- and that they have no communication whatsoever."
Remember, one of the priorities AFTER 9/11/2001 was to make sure first responders had equipment that worked in case of emergency because there were these kinds of problems in NYC when the towers fell.

Yet here we are four years later, and thanks to pResident Weakenstupid, cops in New Orleans don't have working radios.

32. For a moment, I wondered if I was reading about a town in IRAQ.
Wonder how many other, non-DU citizens are thinking about the parallels between there and our ravaged Gulf Coast (my hometown is Fort Walton Beach, parents live in Pensacola and used to live in Baton Rouge - I just still have a hard time believing how horrible this is).

Oh yeah, and b*s* needs to be arrested, for about ten thousand things, but especially for how he's handling both Iraq and this disaster!
