Some stations out of gas; others charge $6 a gallon

Gas stations ran dry in pockets across the East, Southeast and Midwest on Thursday, and prices rocketed above $6 a gallon in isolated areas, as damage from Hurricane Katrina delayed shipments hundreds of miles from where it hit.

Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue declared a state of emergency to activate the state's price-gouging law after reports of gas priced up to $6.19 a gallon in the Atlanta area. "There's been a good bit of price rollback" since the declaration, state consumer affairs spokesman Bill Cloud says. "But we're still getting reports of people raising prices" by $2 or $3 a gallon. "People just decided to make a quick buck."

Gougers can be penalized up to $5,000 for each violation. "I'm going to ask the lawyers if we can call each gallon a violation," Cloud says. "Hey, when you price by the gallon ..."

....

Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell said Thursday that he might ration fuel and suspend state gas taxes. That's the first threat of official rationing since Katrina shut down nearly all operations in the energy-rich Gulf of Mexico. Pipelines from the gulf carry fuel thousands of miles to the East and Midwest. Those pipelines are closed or pumping slowly.

1. I wish they'd tell us the status here
in our city. The stupid newscasters just seem oblivious to real life - simply want to make it clear there's no shortage of gas, but there's a shortage of refining capacity.

I drove past a gas station today that didn't have any prices on their sign - made me THINK they were out of gas. Two days ago, two places in our city had to close (NE Indiana) because of gas shortages.

3. The status is: We're out of (affordable) oil.
Well, not quite yet, but the day is now here when oil supplies are
insufficient to meet demand.

And it's *NEVER* going to get better unless there's a large (huge!)
reduction in demand, perhaps as a result of a global die-off of humans.

We all knew this day was coming; now it's here.

And we'll all end up dealing with it, although it's likely to be the
death of many of us.

4. Pinellas schools facing shortage of bus fuel
With deliveries slowed by Katrina, the district is considering ways to keep the buses running as scheduled.

By DONNA WINCHESTER and JEFF SOLOCHEK
Published September 2, 2005

Pinellas schools may have to limit bus service next week because of a diesel fuel shortage caused by Hurricane Katrina, officials said Thursday.

The district is making contingency plans for transporting more than 42,000 children after waiting several days for a fuel delivery that has not come.
>snip<

"Absent having a fuel delivery, we're going to have to look at alternatives as early as Tuesday," Wilcox said. "We're hopeful that if we partner with some of our friends and colleagues at other community agencies, we will have enough fuel on hand. But if we don't, over the course of this weekend, we will have to make a call."

The district is considering several options, including having school buses fill up at gas stations and asking parents of high school students to drive their children to school, Wilcox said.

What a mess this may turn into - very quickly.

5. There is NO "Gouging" in Indiana.
Heard that on the news this AM. Steve Carter, AG of the Grate Hoosier State says that it's not gouging until Governor Our Bitch Mitch (Mitch Danniels) DECLARES that gas gouging is happening.

Which, of COURSE, he has NOT.....

Wonder how much money OBM gets from the Gas Retailers Assoc.?

7. How is this a solution?
"The district is considering several options, including having school buses fill up at gas stations and asking parents of high school students to drive their children to school, Wilcox said."

Which is more efficient, one diesel powered school bus transporting 40 students, or 40 parents driving their kids to school in a mix of cars, vans, pickups and SUVs?
