Casinos worried about impact of soaring gas prices

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Supply disruptions caused by Hurricane Katrina are pushing gasoline prices up, and a casino industry leader said Thursday there's concern that the higher prices could in turn prompt some tourists to cancel Nevada travel plans.

Fuel prices in Nevada neared $3 a gallon for unleaded regular and were closer to $4 a gallon in many other parts of the country on Thursday, and AAA Nevada said this state's average prices could quickly increase.

"There is concern in the industry how the consumers are going to react whenever you have these kinds of price increases," said Bill Bible, executive director of the Nevada Resort Association which represents most major hotel-casinos.

"But we're not projecting any sort of calamity," added Bible. "This is uncharted territory with this rapid escalation in prices."

I'm a dealer in a low-limit grind joint on the Strip. I don't make much money as it is because tips are low, but when you factor in the work I miss due to foot and ankle problems and that my insurance has just been threatened because of the missed time, I'm absolutely miserable.
