Massachusetts colleges offer spots to Gulf Coast students

BOSTON --The five-campus University of Massachusetts is offering emergency admission to Gulf Coast students whose education has been affected by Hurricane Katrina, President Jack. M. Wilson said Thursday. State and community colleges also have pledged to find ways to help displaced students, as have some private colleges.

Regis College announced it will offer 25 spots to New Orleans-area college students, and Boston College said Gulf Coast students can apply for visiting student status for the fall semester.

U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy has asked the 55-member Association of Independent Colleges and Universities in Massachusetts to assemble information about what capacity the schools have to support displaced students, said association president Richard Doherty. There are about 300 students from Massachusetts registered in New Orleans colleges and at least 50 in Mississippi schools, Doherty said. Regis said its offer is "basically tuition free, with transfers of room and board, financial aid and course and credit issues to be worked out with the home college or university," a Regis news release said. "Students from New Orleans and Mississippi colleges can safely continue their education here until the home college is on its feet again," Regis President Mary Jane England said.

University of Colorado, Boulder is already full to overflowing, but UC Colorado Springs, UNC (Greeley) and CSU (Ft. Collins) are accepting applications.

Heard on radio yesterday. Several parents have asked on behalf of their children, apparently.

This was pulled together very quickly by a consortium of colleges/universities. Here in Charlottesville not only the U of Virginia will be accepting ~100 students, but the community college will take some in as well.

18. It's takes forever for things to get passed in colleges

I think it is amazing that the colleges around the nation are able to make these plans available for students... normally whenever anything needs to pass or get done in a college it takes forever to happen, so this is amazing... why can't our country work with the same amount of speed to provide aid to dieing people !

23. The federal gov't leadership apparently lost the compassion part of

their compassionate conservatism, I guess!!

I saw the head of Tulane on TV last night, and while not being specific, it was clear to him that he was VERY hopeful that this situation was going to be resolved quickly.

From an academic standpoint, the benefits to the students, both those going to the schools as visitors, and the students who are part of the regular student bodies in the host schools, are tremendous. There's nothing like interaction to increase understanding, and that is something you cannot get out of a book.

They're offering 15 in-state tuition waivers along with guarantee of dorm housing and tuition counseling (whatever that is).

22. adminstrator at my school just announce that we'll be offering NOLA region

medstudents and Resident physicians spaces at this University and area hospitals for any for want to come. I imagine many other schools across the country are doing the same.
