US can handle Iraq, Katrina: Bush

US President George W. Bush has rejected calls to pull resources from the war in Iraq to handle Hurricane Katrina, saying: "We've got plenty of resources to do both."

"The people (have) just got to know, we've got what it takes to do more than one thing. And we'll secure our country from the terrorists and we'll help rebuild this part of the world," he said after touring this devastated town.

Some US lawmakers have asked that Washington call home members of the National Guard whose homes were devastated by the storm, others worry about the multi-billion-dollar pricetag of funding both ventures.

"I just completely disagree," said the president.

8. What about hurricane Lee? Maria? Nate? Ophelia?
The hurricane season won't peak for another two weeks, according to history. And it will continue for more than a month after that. It is almost guaranteed that two or three more hurricanes will slam in to the United States this year. What if one of those hits the Gulf again? What about the even greater devastation that will result because so many people now are homeless?

Is anyone in the Bush administration even thinking about this, much less planning for it?

(Note: Names in the subject line are from the list of 2005 hurricane names, so don't be shocked when these names actually do hit.

16. TechBear!
You blew it! You should have kept quiet about the list, and that way we'd think you were psychic!

But seriously -- you raise an important point. I woke up from a bad dream last night, where another hurricane hit the Gulf Coast this month, destroying what was left of New Orleans and also the planes/ships/rescuers who'd come to help. I had to go check the news channel to make sure it was only a nightmare.

Re: the peak in hurricane activity -- I'm a climate change researcher, and some of the people I work with are worried that the cycle will not follow earlier patterns and drop off in a few years, but continue to be this way, later in the century. It's not out of the question that the current storm season may lengthen, starting earlier and finishing later (we're already seeing this for forest fires in some areas). I really hope we are wrong about this!

And the U.S. shouldn't: it should leave Iraq and attend to Katrina.

you stupid fuck*!

Like the old saying goes, if you give him enough rope, he'll hang himself. Let's just keep feeding it out. We have a short year before the midterms, unless he walks on water between then and now, he will be swinging from the rafters come December of next year.

colossal failure*.

30. I think we were better off
in the Stone Age.

At least back then, I could count on my buddy in the Cave Next Door to help me out. He'd help me because he knows I'd help him in the next disaster, like a Mastodon attacking us, or a saber tooth tiger raiding our camp.

Life was just better then.
