Airlines Begin Evacuation Flights
DALLAS -- The nation's major carriers have begun flights meant to airlift more than 25,000 people stranded in New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina.

The evacuees will be taken to Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio and other sites picked by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

...snip...

The airlines want the government to pay the cost of the mercy operation.

The New Orleans airport is functioning only on a limited basis, so the flights will be limited to daylight hours.

nothing was happening and he really kicked things into high gear.

I didn't get a chance to see him in NO with the mayor, was he strutting around like pappy did after the LA riots?

2. Say what?
In view of all the bailouts we, the people, have provided to airlines, it might be good PR for the airlines to shoulder some of the cost as a humanitarian gesture. JMHO

3. This should've started Tuesday
And I know NO Airport was probably closed earlier, but there was no reason the people couldn't have been bussed to another airport and then flown out. Planes like the 737 can fly out of even some regional airports. Why didn't they federalize some airline planes Tuesday. Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot Brown was out to lunch and Bunnypants was appearing in front of his favorite uniformed audience trying to compare himself to FDR. But FDR would've acted!

From personal experience.

8. This should have started Sunday, or even Saturday.
But the airlines weren't flying in because no one was going in, so they didn't send planes to fly people out.
