Kanye West Slams Bush In Live Telethon
-----------------------
Ryan Burrow - Chicago
-----------------------
During NBC's live broadcast of Concert for Hurricane Relief rapper Kanye West, in what appeared to be an impromptu address, told viewers that National Guardsmen were given the unfair order to shoot at African-Americans on the streets of New Orleans.

In a stumbling, yet defiant statement, West proclaimed that when African-Americans were caught stealing in New Orleans, they were called looters. However when whites were caught, they were just feeding their families.

He was joined by former Saturday Night Live star Mike Myers, who returned to the script, and seemed frustrated by the the rapper's remarks.

West then declared "George Bush doesn't care about black people." Before the rapper could complete his statement, NBC producers cut away.

Well, at least he got out an important statement first:

West then declared "George Bush doesn't care about black people." Before the rapper could complete his statement, NBC producers cut away.

10. I thought it was the end of this statement
Edited on Fri Sep-02-05 09:21 PM by sus
he sort of just said it and there was a beat and then they went to Tucker.

and what else could he add to that?? he pretty much said it all. he doesn't care about them. end of story and (probably) his statement.

and who cares if they cut him off? he said what needed to be said. he was passionate and genuine. it was great.

5. I didn't see this, but...
...I know Mike Myers' brother very well (he has a radio show here in Vancouver) and I feel I've got to protect Mikey here...(we were talking about this just last week).

Canadians in the US as successful as Mike Myers have to be VERY FUCKING CAREFUL about what they say and the way they act in the media. They're held up to perhaps even MORE scrutiny than even the most staunchest US liberal, ie. Faux News "If you don't like it here, go the fuck home...".

It's a VERY REAL phenom; other Canucks like Peter Jennings, Michael J. Fox, Neil Young and the like get dual citizenship JUST SO THEY CAN OPEN THEIR MOUTHS south of the border.

I KNOW Myers is a lib. Just sayin'....

24. Chris Tucker stumbled like he wasn't expecting to be "on" yet.
I thought they cut the rest of the statement after he said Bush doesn't care about black people.
I thought he was going to back it up with something like "because he is letting them suffer and die."

Truth is, Bush doesn't care about anyone but his rich friends -- his "base." Actually, I don't think he cares about them, he only cares about what they can do for him or give him because he only cares about himself.

37. Can you imagine if they had cut to Chris Rock? He would have said perhaps
the most perfect response that anyone could have thought of....I'm thinking something along the lines of "Call out the National Guard folks, the White peoples' ears are bleeding!"

Wow, I wish I had seen this live...the fact that NBC would "censor" it gives me just one more reason why I won't watch them.

...but if you ever see a Canadian artist south of the border, who's otherwise/obviously a hard core lib, KEEP THEIR MOUTH'S SHUT in US media, I hope you appreciate their, um..."predicament".

I'm just saying, it can be stifling for even hard lefties like Joni Mitchell, who's VERY VOCAL when she's at her home up here, but tends to keep her mouth shut down there.

You need to pick your spots, when you're going to say provocative things on television. This may have caused some people not to donate, and this was, after all, a TELETHON to raise money for those poor people down in NOLA.

Get the money out of the people, and THEN speak your truth.

Sorry, but though I think this was the right statement, I think it was the wrong forum.

Seriously. They've got some big issues.

As I've posted elsewhere, there's a special place in the Beyond for them. But it's not a nice place. The shame for their misplaced anger, bigotry, "patriotism" or whatever excuse they're using for their refusal to give money to starving, sick, injured members of their country is on them, not Mr. West.

41. Reuters story on Kanye West's remarks.....
Rapper Kanye West blasts Bush on TV benefit show
Sat Sep 3, 2005 4:25 AM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Rapper Kanye West surprised viewers of an NBC benefit concert for Hurricane Katrina victims on Friday by accusing President George W. Bush of racism.

"George Bush doesn't care about black people," West said from New York during the show aired live on the East Coast on NBC, MSNBC, CNBC and Pax, just before cameras cut away to comedian Chris Tucker.

West, who is black, suggested moments earlier that delays in providing relief to survivors of the hurricane that hit the U.S. Gulf Coast on Monday and flooded New Orleans were deliberate. He said America was set up "to help the poor, the black people, the less well-off as slow as possible."

The Grammy award-winning singer, who was paired with comedian Mike Myers, also said in what NBC described as unscripted remarks, "We already realized a lot of the people that could help are at war right now, fighting another way, and they've given them permission to go down and shoot us."

44. You might find this info. interesting on the Red Cross in N.O.:
From this website: http://dumbya.dailykos.com/storyonly/2005/9/2/2125/04978
"So I called the Red Cross and asked them if its true....

(editor's note, by SteveRose) updated to more blatant title.

SteveRose's diary :: ::
And, to my surprise, the nice lady answering the phone said it was true and they told/asked/ordered not to enter NO. She then went right into her spiel about all the other work the Red Cross was doing across the region. I said that's nice, but I still didn't understand why they weren't in NO. To my amazement, she patiently explained it to me. I even called back to verify what she said. This time she asked if I was media, I said no, just a concerned and confused contributor.

So here goes: Homeland Security (her term, not mine) told the Red Cross DO NOT enter New Orleans and says this still now. And why, you may ask? Not Security. Not worker safety. Not lack of access. It was because people would be drawn to the Red Cross food and they wouldn't want to go to be evacuated. So I asked: "The people starving and dying at the convention center yesterday couldn't get Red Cross food and water because they would be drawn to the food at the convention center, where they were, and not want to be evacuated from the convention center where no evacuations were going on or planned and all the while they are dying". (Actually, it was a couple questions.) She went back into her spiel about all of the other good work they were doing. When I asked again, she said yes, that was true. She seem relieved to admit it. "
