Bob Dole Issues Jailed Reporter's (Judith Miller) Plea

Former Senator Bob Dole issued a plea on Friday from Judith Miller, the reporter for The New York Times, her first public statement since being jailed in early July.

After a luncheon address at the National Press Club, Mr. Dole read a letter given to him last week by Ms. Miller in which she repeated calls for the passage of a federal shield law that would enable journalists to protect their sources.

In her brief statement, Ms. Miller said that "the battle for freedom has many fronts" and mentioned that she was just one of more than 20 American journalists facing possible jail sentences for refusing to identify confidential sources.

Mr. Dole, the Republican presidential candidate in 1996, referred to Ms. Miller as a friend and said he had "had the honor" of visiting her in jail on more than one occasion.

Upshot: 20 year CIA WMD project destroyed and all of its covert agents and contacts put at great risk (some probably killed as a result).
