JP's Maestri said FEMA didn't keep its word
Jefferson Parish Emergency Preparedness Director Walter Maestri said Friday night that the Federal Emergency Management Agency reneged on a promise to begin relieving county emergency preparedness staffers 48 hours after Hurricane Katrina hit the New Orleans metropolitan area. Maestri’s staff has been working almost around the clock since Katrina approached the Louisiana coastline on Sunday. Today, the staff is expected to finally switch to a 12 hours on/12 hours off schedule, he said, adding that they’re both tired and demoralized by the lack of assistance from federal officials. “We had been told we would be on our own for 48 hours,” Maestri said. Prepare to survive and in 48 hours the cavalry would arrive.

“Well, where are they?” he said. Maestri said the agreement was signed by officials with the Southeastern Louisiana Emergency Preparedness Officials Association, the state and the Federal Emergency Management Agency as part of this year’s Hurricane Pam tabletop exercise. That exercise began the process of writing a series of manuals explaining how to respond to a catastrophic disaster. Financed by FEMA, it included a variety of federal, state and local officials. A FEMA spokesman late Friday said they couldn’t confirm or deny that
the agency signed the agreement Maestri referred to.

FEMA Director Michael Brown also raised Maestri’s ire when he said in a television interview Friday that he waited so long to respond because he didn’t want to interfere with local aid attempts, and that local officials hadn’t asked FEMA to come in. “My response is very simple,” Maestri said in an interview on a cell phone after repeated attempts to reach his office. “We didn’t have any communications. We still don’t have outside communications.” He said FEMA officials have now informed him the first members of a liaison team might arrive at the Emergency Operations Center this morning or Sunday. Staffers also are upset by Thursday comments by House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill. that suggested he felt the city shouldn’t be rebuilt. Asked in the interview whether it made sense to spend billions rebuilding a city that lies below sea level, he replied, ``I don't know. That doesn't make sense to me.''

He said several of Hastert’s comments are posted on the center’s wall, “like the comments of opposing coaches are pinned on the wall of the Saints locker room.
Hastert's office later issued a statement insisting he was not calling for the city to be abandoned or relocated. Maestri admitted he and his staff were tired and frustrated, and that that helped fuel his criticism. Also on his list for criticism was new Louisiana Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness Assistant Director Jeff Smith, who he talked to for the first time only on Thursday.

this man should be taken for a swim in Lake George

... he waited so long to respond because he didn’t want to interfere with local aid attempts, and that local officials hadn’t asked FEMA to come in. “My response is very simple,” Maestri said in an interview on a cell phone after repeated attempts to reach his office. “We didn’t have any communications. I can't read anything else tonight...I am sicker than sick at what I have been reading...

8. This is beyond criminal
"he waited so long to respond because he didn’t want to interfere with local aid attempts, and that local officials hadn’t asked FEMA to come in."

Brown(is suppose to be) the head of FEMA--they don't wait to be asked, they come in when there is a National disaster(Bush declared one before Katrina hit)and they take over!!!

GOD!!! I'm not a violent person, but I swear---This man should be tarred and feathered and then turned loose in NO so the suffering masses can take a crack at him.

9. Brown, like Tenet, will be the administration's designated scapegoat
Which means, of course, that boosh* will see fit to award him a medal ("For Meritorious Service", naturally) shortly after he leaves.

11. Brown is already in hot water over missing funds [30 million]
in Fla. Seems as if money just disapeared and papers are not in order over distribution of funds to hurricane victims. But Bush said he supports Brown. Yep.

12. There you have it. boosh* support = Kiss of Death
I wonder if he makes appointees pass a wad of burning paper from hand to hand, saying "This is the way I will burn if I betray Lord Boosh." (Old reference to Joe Velachi, and I know I'm dating myself.)

How President Poopy-Pants manages to consistently scrape the bottom of the barrel without disturbing anything above it constantly amazes me.

Well, no, I guess it doesn't.

14. About Tenet. There have been reports that the CIA is preparing
some sort of charges or severe criticism. Tenet, who has received a $4.5 million book offer, is considering telling all. He won't go down alone, and he undoubtedly has many recently ex-CIA friends, who have been maligned, to help him take the Bushies with him.

It could get ugly. He should stay out of small planes, tall buildings and small boats at night.

15. our experience with FEMA - from an evacuee
We safely evacuated to North Louisiana on Sunday with our pets and important papers. We began trying to contact FEMA by phone. We are staying with family but will need a more permanent housing situation soon. After being on hold and entering some information this message came on "if you'd like to make a call, please hang up.."

SO then we decided to try the website. You have to have Internet Explorer 6 to use the website. We have a Macintosh. There is no IE 6 for Mac. So that didn't work. THEN, we had a relative let us use his PC...but the forms never worked correctly and kept reverting our information to incorrect info. and there was a warning about how if your info is not correct that you can be held criminally responsible (whatever)....so we gave up on that avenue.

The next day we tried again on the phone which took quite some time but finally got our names in the system. The person on the other end didn't speak english very well which significantly hindered the process.

Ow it looks like what they are offering us is a LOAN...not a grant and they want more details about our damage (which obviously we can't give them since we live in the city)

THey have our bank routing info and are supposed to be helping us with housing expenses....

so we shall see

and put Brown and other party hacks and cronies in their places.
Its not FEMA - its the incompetents who manage it.

20. Aha! I was wondering...
... where Maestri was, having read all about his professional assessment of the likely aftermath of a Cat 5 hurricane hitting NOLA on the web on Sunday afternoon... when a lot of other DUers were doing the same.

If *I* figured out that this disaster was imminent, then FEMA and * and everyone else should have realized it, too! WTF?!

Anyway, now it makes sense - didn't hear anything from Maestri after Sunday night late because he has been an indentured servant for the Halliburton-controlled privatized FEMA since then! No rest for the weary!

No room at the inn!

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
