NEW ORLEANS (AP) - National Guard members halted the evacuation of
the Superdome early Saturday after buses transporting the refugees of
Hurricane Katrina stopped rolling. About 2,000 people remained in the
stadium and could be there until Sunday, according to the Texas Air
National Guard. They had hoped to evacuate the last of the crowd
before dawn Saturday.

Guard members said they were told only that the buses had stopped
coming and to close down the area where the buses were loaded.

"We were rolling," Capt. Jean Clark said. "If the buses had kept
coming, we would have this whole place cleaned out already or pretty
close to it."

The remaining refugees remained orderly, sitting down after hearing
the news.

6. wtf? "if we help then they won't want to leave"
are these people completely out of their minds? they think people will actually say, hey, thanks for the water and food, I've really grown fond of this freeway overpass, so I'll pass on actual shelter, a shower, and safety.

This has to be a bad bad dream.

4. Richland Parish School Buses
Edited on Sat Sep-03-05 04:22 AM by Cinletharwi
A convoy of about 10 (large, empty) Richland Parish School buses passed through Natchez, MS early Friday afternoon heading down HWY 61 towards Baton Rouge. Around 4-5PM they passed back through Natchez heading back across the river the way they orginally came - still empty.

My friends and I were wondering why they were turned around while we all knew they were desperately needed in N.O.

25. They "lost" a Spanish Diplomat last night...
Some officer on the radio was sounding pretty panicky about not being able to find her/him--around midnight.

This is just what we need..losing and mistreating OTHER countries officials.

It is a prison and the conditions make Abu Ghraib look like Club Med.

26. They are "orderly" because they are oxygen-deprived in that
stinking, shit-filled hellhole. If I were one of them I would gather up the others, walk out through that 3 feet of water to safety, and tell the soldiers to go right ahead and shoot me in the back if they felt they had to.

Time to RISE UP, people.

14. Silly rabbit, these folks don't vote Republican !!
... that's why they're being treated as less-than-human !

When's the last time any of them was at a $10,000-a-plate Bush fundraiser ? They would have been evac'd on SUNDAY if they had their autopgraphed George W. luncheon ticket stub ...

15. The plan is genocide.
After seeing the actions of the government this week, I've no doubt it's genocide.

But, there will never be enough dead to satisfy their craven needs.

23. There was chaos on the local police scanner last night about buses
Edited on Sat Sep-03-05 10:24 AM by rainbow4321
"Start the buses, stop the buses, turn them AROUND, WHERE are the buses?, the Greyhound bus has broke down".

No one seemed to know where the orders were coming from, they were just following them. This was after midnight. Which may be happening at that time cuz the media spotlight is not around as it is during the daytime.

They kept "losing" 45-55 buses at a TIME..how hard is it to keep track of this many buses when they are in a convoy.

They were putting a Nat'l Guard soldier on every other bus.

If you go to DU's GD forum, there is a "scanner" thread with links to local police scanners as well as the FEMA frequency. Interesting to hear things as they happen, as opposed getting the filtered
version.

BTW, can they NOT find some military vehicles to move these folks instead of **Greyhound buses** that seem to be repeatedly breaking down??

There is TOTAL chaos on the ground with the cops/NG...sounded like they had no one in charge--or at least admitting they were in charge, orders were just coming out of no where, no one on the radio seemed to know who was giving them.
