"Agency takes in millions in morning-after pill sales"
http://www.boston.com/news/nation/washington/articles/2005/09/03/agency_takes_in_millions_in_morning_after_pill_sales/

By Diedtra Henderson, Globe Staff

Editorial comment: how to lie without lying. Read on.

WASHINGTON -- When the Food and Drug Administration on Aug. 26 delayed its decision on whether emergency contraception pills could be purchased without a prescription, the Planned Parenthood Federation of America called it ''a terrible day for women's health."

...

But none of the public announcements mentioned that the national not-for-profit organization reaps millions of dollars in revenue by dispensing Plan B, the morning-after pill that has embroiled the FDA in controversy.

Internal e-mails exchanged between Planned Parenthood employees, and provided to the Globe by an attorney who filed a wrongful firing lawsuit on behalf of a former executive, indicate the drug's manufacturer sells Plan B kits -- with one or two pills in each -- to Planned Parenthood clinics at a ''special" price of $4.25 apiece. The kits are usually sold to consumers for about $30.

...

Concerned Women for America, a Washington-based group that opposes abortion, said Planned Parenthood should be more forthcoming about its financial stake in the drug.

''The profit motive behind Planned Parenthood's involvement in making the morning-after pill is something that needs to be seriously looked at and questioned," said Wendy Wright, senior policy director for that group.

Got the gist of it? That bad Planned Parenthood is raking in the bucks, the filthy corrupt librul bastards, in secret, not disclosing their conflict of interest in Plan B contraception. Horrors.

Well not quite.

In paragraph 16 Diedtra Henderson manages to note that:

The changes could actually diminish the revenue Plan B generates for the organization because women could buy it in more places, Toledo said.

Oh. I see. So the conflict of interest is that Planned Parenthood, which is strongly advocating for making Plan B available without a perscription over the counter, will lose revenue if the legislation it is backing is passed. Got it. Thanks for pointing that out 16 paragraphs into your lying sack of shit propaganda piece.

1. Get the gist. But for millions of American women it doesn't matter
who makes what, when they find themselves in a particular predicament. Too bad the opinion of millions of women simply doesn't matter.

2. I question that whole premise.
I personally know someone who gets her general GYN care and contraception at Planned Parenthood here in California. They don't charge, although they do ask for a donation. And they always offer Plan B to "have on hand, just in case" -- FREE OF CHARGE -- as well as a supply of condoms "to use and to give away."

Someone (I wonder who?)is just trying to smear PP. Personally, I think they're one of the finest organizations on the planet.

3. Its our 'librul media' of course.
This was front page on today's Boston Globe (below the fold but still front page.) It is competing with the New Orleans Atrocity for space. The headline is inflammatory and misleading. The article is deliberately constructed to mislead.

:wtf:

The Globe is supposedly a liberal NE paper.

5. My OB/GYN refuses to prescribe Plan B or emergency contraception.
The local health dept. and public city health clinic will not prescribe either. If you want it, you have to call PP . I don't know if the UGA health clinic dispenses it. You have to call PP and ask for a prescription. PP charges $40 for EC prescription (you need a credit card) and then you have to go pay for the pills at the pharmacy.

8. Theo-fascist's worst nightmare:
abortions no longer needed due to emergency contraception medicine. What will they do?
How will they organize the sheeple?

6. So Planned Parenthood pays $4.25
for these kits and gives them away

They lose money and this is suppsed to be a conflict of interest?

7. And they are advocating to make Plan B over the counter
which will reduce their revenue from the kits to next-to-nothing. Of course the article is just regurgitating rightwing talking points from some theo-fascist washington advocacy group named "Concerned Women For America". Ah the MSM, so compliant, so eager to please.

9. But it apparently does give all of them away.
The percentage is not disclosed:

"In 2003, the most recent year statistics are available, it distributed 774,482 emergency contraception kits. A spokeswoman, Elizabeth Toledo, said the agency distributes some kits for free or at sliding rate scales, though she declined to provide specifics."

Having it OTC could, in fact, lower PP's revenue, because of competition. But that's not a sure thing, because it would allow PP to dispense it themselves more readily, under more circumstances, thus increasing volume.

What the result would be turns out to be a function, not an actual number, given what the article says.
