Venezuela Preparing to Repel U.S. Invasion if Necessary, Chavez Says

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) - Venezuela has uncovered plans for a U.S.-led invasion and is preparing to defend the country against invading forces, President Hugo Chavez said in a report carried by the state-run news agency.

The Bolivarian News Agency reported late Friday that Chavez made the comments during an interview with CNN. It was unclear when the interview was to be aired.

"If it occurs to the United States to invade our country - Fidel Castro said it and I agree - a war will start here to last 100 years," Chavez was quoted as saying. "We are preparing to repel an invasion."

Chavez has made similar claims in the past, and U.S. officials have repeatedly denied them as ridiculous. Venezuela is the world's fifth largest oil exporter and a major supplier of fuel to the United States.

13. Chavez Supporters Want Robertson Prosecuted for Assassination Call

More than 100 supporters of Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez marched through Caracas on Saturday to demand justice against American religious broadcaster Pat Robertson for recently suggesting their president should be killed.

The protesters said they were asking Venezuelan prosecutors to get involved. Marchers held signs with images of Robertson, including one calling him an "enemy of Venezuela."

The march came after Chavez reiterated in a recent interview with CNN that Venezuela is prepared to defend itself against a U.S. invasion if necessary.

in reading more. It's somewhat interesting, to be sure:

The U.S.-based Web site VHeadline.com, which focuses on Venezuela, published an article last year saying the Spanish military held "Operation Balboa" in May 2001, conducting a mock assault in which the United States and allied countries simulated an attack on western Venezuela from bases in Panama and Colombia.

Citing documents on the exercises, the Web site's article said U.S. and NATO officials provided confidential and secret information about Venezuela for the simulation conducted by 26 lieutenant colonels and other officials from the Spanish air force and other countries.

The state news agency's report did not make clear whether Chavez was referring to those particular exercises in 2001 or others with the same name. Chavez had been sharply critical of the former Spanish government of then-Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar, but has good relations with the current Spanish government.

Spain's Defense Minister said Saturday it didn't immediately have a response to Chavez's comments.

U.S. officials in the past have said such training is meant to prepare troops for general scenarios but not for a specify military action.

The state news agency, commonly known as ABN for its initials in Spanish, said according to Chavez the invasion plan has included a wave of bombings over Caracas and the cities of Maracay and Valencia.
