Bush aides meet at White House with black leaders

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff and a number of President Bush's other top advisers met Saturday black leaders amid allegations that indifference to black suffering slowed response to Hurricane Katrina.

Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, D-Md., past chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, said he believes the administration was partly interested in offering assurances that any missteps in getting relief to the victims - many of them black - would be corrected.

"I think a lot of people in the African American community - and others, by the way - share Bush's view that the results of his efforts have been unacceptable," Cummings said after the meeting at the White House.

"I think they wanted to make sure that the leaders of the Congressional Black Caucus, the Urban League and the NAACP knew that they were very sensitive to trying to make sure that things went right from here on out. And I think they wanted to try to dispel any kind of notions that the administration did not care about African American people - or anyone else."

That the Congressional Black Caucus FORCED Bush to meet with them, during the Aristide crisis in Haiti.

They called Andy Card and told him they were coming. When they showed up, they were met by Colin Powell and Condi Rice. They were told Bush was not at the White House. But when they said they would not leave until meeting with him, he miraculously appeared 15 minutes later.

Why give them the opportunity to pretend that these were "missteps"? Rather, make a big point of refusing to meet with this administration and call them what they are - racist thugs who don't give a rip whether poor people or black people live or die. Refuse to play Bush's game! Refuse to participate in the charade! Make clear that its us against them - a fight to the finish and a matter of life or death - because that's what it is.

JACKSON, Miss. -- President Bush's top advisers met Saturday with black leaders concerned about the administration's slow response to blacks suffering from Hurricane Katrina, while the head of the NAACP said it was not time for "finger-pointing."

NAACP President Bruce Gordon said that any recriminations over how the government treated Gulf Coast residents can wait until the mostly poor and black victims are given the care they desperately need.

"Right now, the NAACP is in what I call a life-saving mode. We are not in a finger-pointing mode and until every life has been stabilized and every life has been saved, we will devote all of our energies for that purpose," Gordon said.

Gordon and Mississippi NAACP officials spoke at a news conference in Jackson hours after Bush administration officials including Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff met with black leaders in Washington about allegations that indifference to black suffering slowed the response.
