NAACP says poor people hurt by slow response to Katrina

JACKSON, Miss. - NAACP President Bruce Gordon says it's clear the economic status of those left stranded on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and New Orleans played a part in the federal government's response to the needs of Hurricane Katrina victims.

But Gordon said Saturday now is not the time for "finger-pointing" at the Bush administration. That can wait, he said, until the mostly poor and black victims are given the care they desperately need.

"Right now, the NAACP is in what I call a lifesaving mode. We are not in a finger-pointing mode and until every life has been stabilized and every life has been saved, we will devote all of our energies for that purpose," Gordon said.

...

Gordon said he watched the federal government's reaction to the 9-11 tragedy and, "I want to see the same kind of response."

2. Poor, Black, Needy were terrorized by lack of W's action
NO also voted 77% for Kerry. People are drawing their own conclusions as to why W was handing out bottled water to white citizens in Florida the day after hurricane Frances.

6. Don't sell Texas short
They had a front row view of this - are dealing with the consequences of a rapid influx of new people - and know that only by the grace of meteorology, etc, etc...

7. Captain obvious strikes again.
It's a shame that the NAACP (or anyone) has to actually explain how difficult it is for poor people to prance off to the Hamptons during hurricane season. :grr:

8. Poor people were fucked in every way by many people
The obviously bad hydrogical engineering of the city.

Urban planning that allowed the most flood-prone areas of the city to be used as residential neighborhoods rather than golf courses or rice paddies.

The brutal but inevitable and coldly logical placement of the POOREST neighborhoods in the WORST possible locaitons.

The fact that NOBODY at ANY level of government had in place a plan to evacuate tens of thousands of people.
