Texas May Not Be Able To Take More Evacuees

HOUSTON -- Texas Gov. Rick Perry is worried that his state may not be able to take many more evacuees from Hurricane Katrina.

Perry said Texas is committed to doing everything it can to help, but wants to be sure it can provide the services needed, including medical care and education.

Local officials "are beginning to notify us that they are quickly approaching capacity," Perry said.

Louisiana and the Federal Emergency Management Agency have been alerted.

Texas has taken in more than 220,000 evacuees, with more on the way. Nearly 19,000 are in the Houston Astrodome.

In the aftermath of the exodus into Texas – a mass migration in which an estimated 223,000 Louisiana residents moved into shelters, hotels and relatives' homes from Houston to Amarillo – questions remain over why no one agency or government official appeared to be in charge.

But Dallas' ordeal had not entirely played itself out. As late as 5 p.m. on Saturday, minutes after learning that bus flow into the state was tapering off, Dallas officials got word that 100 more buses might be en route to North Texas. They will probably be diverted to Arkansas or Oklahoma, Ms. Miller said.

By Saturday night, at least 15,000 evacuees had arrived in the Dallas area. About 8,200 are staying at the Dallas Convention Center and Reunion Arena, and thousands more have registered to receive services and supplies at those facilities.

Several thousand additional evacuees have been dispersed across North Texas. The response of area communities varied from enthusiastic to tepid. Some officials raised concerns that they were not equipped to deal with a large influx of evacuees who lacked even the most basic necessities.

Dallas makes desperate plea for help


Dallas city officials made a desperate plea for help Saturday morning, saying that, within hours, they will have far more Hurricane Katrina evacuees than they can possibly manage.

Meanwhile, officials in Mesquite announced Saturday that the evacuee staging area there, overwhelmed with hurricane survivors, said they could no longer handle the busloads and was shutting down. Dallas police scrambled to set up a new area, and as of 11 a.m., said it would likely be near the Convention Center.

The number of New Orleans evacuees at the Dallas Convention Center and Reunion Arena doubled overnight, and as of 10:30 a.m., at least 105 more buses – carrying thousands of needy people – were headed for the city.

On Friday morning, Dallas officials were told to expect 25 buses, Mr. Miguez said. By Friday afternoon, that number had grown to 50. At 6 a.m. today, Mr. Miguez said, the number had grown again – this time to 150.

Give me a break. Texas has these major metro areas, all with major health resources, housing, schools, and jobs. How many new people move to Texas every year, more than 40,000 I'll bet. What does little Ricky do, put up a sign, "Full, Try Again Later."

They are warehousing them out of town (10 miles or so) in a barracks and a hanger at an AFB that closed. the city has 200,000+ people, they could take more I'm sure.

Texas is the size of about 5 states and many cities are bigger than Lubbock (El Paso, Witchita Falls, etc.) if Ark can take 50K then many times bigger Texas can take more

My mayor, Houston Mayor Bill White has said we will take ANY and ALL.
He has vowed NO ONE will be turned away.
We have been popping open new places for LA residents in no time flat.
The response of ordinary people in Houston has been like nothing I have ever seen in my life!
We WANT these people here, and we want them to feel welcome to become permanent Texans.

My hometown of San Antonio reports the same. San Antonio has generously opened their doors for as long as necessary and are giving a very warm welcome.

Dallas is stepping up too.

All three of these mayors are DEMOCRATS. The guv is REPUB.

Ignore our idiot Governor, the cities are getting the job done.
