Barbara Bush calls Democrat Line-up a 'sorry group'
The oracle hath spoken:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Former first lady Barbara Bush and mother of President Bush described Democrats trying to unseat her son in the White House as a "sorry group" of politicians. "So far, they are a pretty sorry group if you want to know my opinion," said Mrs. Bush in an interview aired on Monday by NBC's "Today" show, when asked about the Democratic line-up for the 2004 presidential election. "This is the world according to Barbara Bush, not George, not George H.W., not anybody" she added.

Her husband also had some harsh words for the Democratic contenders whom he accused of using "vicious rhetoric." "The one who makes the most outrageous charges against the president gets his 20 seconds on the evening news. Hey I did not ride in here on a watermelon cart. I know how it works," said the former president.

Fiercely proud of their son's achievements, former President Bush said his wife treated the president like any other member of the family, recently telling him after a run to get his feet off the table in their bedroom.

However, Mrs. Bush said the current president frequently declined to do what she said. "He still doesn't take my advice, that dirty dog."

At least any one of these democrats running have command of the English language, which is more than I can say for her son.

6. Barbara, the pot, is calling the kettle black, of course.
"Her husband also had some harsh words for the Democratic contenders whom he accused of using "vicious rhetoric."

Of course, when push polling will be used in 2004, like it was used against John McCain in the South Carolina primary, then Barbara won't say a word against it. "Vicious rhetoric" is in the eye of the beholder. Whomever is the Democratic nominee should consider establishing a "war room" like the Clinton/Gore campaign did in 1992, to handle the viciousness from Bush/Cheney 2004.

Barbara Bush is a mean, spiteful, vindictive woman. This article proves it. Spare me anymore nonsense about how she's a "nice lady". please.

I can't say it, but it rhymes with "twitch"

when she made that mean, spiteful comment about Geraldine Ferraro after the debate in 1984, that sealed my opinion about her. She is the personification of mean - a spiteful, hateful bit*h who doesn't have a nice word to say about anyone that does not agree with her. They should all be banished to the moon - by the way, when is the next shuttle flight? Hmmmm.

140. Newsflash for Babs
Dear, your son is a piece of shit.

Your son murdered 3000 people on 9/11/01.

He murdered 320 brave soldiers in Iraq, plus who knows how many in Afghanistan, plus thousands of Iraqis whose only crime was Living in Iraq. Oh, and let us not forget all the Afghanis who are dead for the heinous crime of Being Afghanis.

His economic record stands alone. I used to think your husband was a horrid domestic-policy president, but your son's far worse. He's worse than Hoover.

To call your son "president" is an affront to the 40 honorable men who came before him, not to mention your husband and Bankruptin' Ronnie Reagan. Your son makes Richard Nixon look good. Your son makes Al Capone look honest.

If there's any justice in this world, they'll let him starve for a couple of months then inject a quart of gasoline into his coal-black heart like Doctor Josef Mengele used to do with the Jews he experimented on, and stand back and laugh while he squirms. It would be a fitting end to the scion of a family with such a long and glorious Nazi history.

142. There are some on this chatboard who would regard your views
as imflammatory and a bit extreme. Others, I have noticed, not only concur with your assessment but also think that giving Barbara Bush an easy time is tantamount to appeasing Hitler.

Of all the people I have ever met who have reached any seniority working either as criminal attorneys, law enforcement officers, security and intelligence personnel or specialist military attaches in the diplomatic service, mostl agree that if she had been put down at birth, a great favour would have been done to Democracy and Democrats alike.

So when she spouts her 50 cents worth on primetime and says Democrats look like a sorry lot it makes me think just how sorry SHE is going to be when they all go down the pan.

Google the phrase "why should I waste my beautiful mind on something like that?" and you will find lots of articles about it. The statement shocked the world for about 12 hours, and then it was all neatly swept under the WH rug, along with all of Georgies occassional and revealing truth tellings. The next occupant will have one hell of a mess to clean up.

Obviously the rich think differently too.

42. Not what I heard
When I lived in D.C. (during the Clinton glory days) I knew a Secret Service agent who had White House detail during the Reagan and Bush years (he was pretty Republican as I recall). When I asked him what different folks there were like he said that Reagan was very unfriendly; wouldn't want anyhing to do with the staff, like that was beneath him. Bush Sr. was very friendly to staff, a real slap on the back "how ya doin'" type of guy and Babs was just plain mean.

123. Would a nice lady say things like this?
At the hospital, she reads a story to some young patients and makes them laugh. But back in the van for the drive home to Kennebunkport, she says that the book she was given to read was without educational value and that the hospital administrators were obsequious—a quality she dislikes. “They thanked me three times, when once would have been fine.” Then, softening abruptly, she thinks back to that morning’s visit to the hospital’s neonatal ICU, where she saw premature infants in incubators. “Where do you draw the line” in saving those who would not have survived in another time? “What kind of quality of life? It’s the same thing with old age. Are we doing the right thing?”

http://www.msnbc.com/news/981361.asp

WTF? I've known several people that had premmies that caught up just fine to their infant peers. What an inhumane bitch.

I'm so sorry that her name is on the children's hospital in Portland. Sorry indeed.

She's evil incarnate.

This is a Guardian story by a shrink who studied the Bushes and wrote an article titled 'So George, How do Feel About Your Mom and Dad?'

Just a reminder to parents: Love and cherish your kids so they don't grow up twisted and try to destroy the world.

"When he was seven, Bush's younger sister, Robin, died of leukaemia and several independent witnesses say he was very upset by this loss. Barbara claims its effect was exaggerated but nobody could accuse her of overreacting: the day after the funeral, she and her husband were on the golf course."

and

"Bush put it like this: "Every mother has her own style. Mine was a little like an army drill sergeant's... my mother's always been a very outspoken person who vents very well - she'll just let rip if she's got something on her mind." According to his uncle, the "letting rip" often included slaps and hits. "

Unfortunately, the 'Bush Virus' has now infected the world at large.
Maybe 'Meet the Family' should be a bigger part of the campaign process than just photo-ops.

82. a brief excerpt from THE GUARDIAN article...
the added bold emphasis is mine

<snip>

She was the main authority-figure in the home. Jeb describes it as having been, "A kind of matriarchy... when we were growing up, dad wasn't at home. Mom was the one to hand out the goodies and the discipline." A childhood friend recalls that,"She was the one who instilled fear", while Bush put it like this: "Every mother has her own style. Mine was a little like an army drill sergeant's... my mother's always been a very outspoken person who vents very well - she'll just let rip if she's got something on her mind." According to his uncle, the "letting rip" often included slaps and hits. Countless studies show that boys with such mothers are at much higher risk of becoming wild, alcoholic or antisocial.

On top of that, Barbara added substantially to the pressure from his father to be a high achiever by creating a highly competitive family culture. All the children's games, be they tiddlywinks or baseball, were intensely competitive - an actual "family league table" was kept of performance in various pursuits. At least this prepared him for life at Andover, where emotional literacy was definitely not part of the curriculum. Soon after arriving, he was asked to write an essay on a soul-stirring experience in his life to date and he chose the death of his sister. His mother had drilled it into him that it was wrong when writing to repeat words already used. Having employed "tears" once in the essay, he sought a substitute from a thesaurus she had given him and wrote "the lacerates ran down my cheeks". The essay received a fail grade, accompanied by derogatory comments such as "disgraceful".

41. What?
Fiercely proud of their son's achievements, former President Bush said his wife treated the president like any other member of the family, recently telling him after a run to get his feet off the table in their bedroom.

May I ask, proud of WHAT achievements? What has he EVER accomplished? Ask that of any RW nut and they come up with nothing!

And the rest of the statment? Oh, they "chastise" him for putting feet on a table but not for lying? "Great parents" (stuck up, pompous, self righteous), they raised "great kids" (spoiled rotten lying, no good cheating, self centered kids), who in turn became "great parents" of drinkers, nuts, druggies, etc,

116. how's this for some 'achievements?'
Accomplishments as President

I attacked and overtook two countries.

I spent the U.S. surplus and effectively bankrupted the U.S. Treasury.

I shattered the record for the largest annual deficit in U.S. history.

I set an economic record for most private bankruptcies filed in any 12-month period.

I set the all-time record for the biggest drop in the history of the U.S. stock market.

My record for environmental issues is the least of my concerns.

I am the first president in U.S. history to enter office with a criminal record.

I set the all-time record for most days on vacation in any one year period.

After taking off the entire month of August, I then presided over the worst security failure in U.S. history.

I set the record for most campaign fundraising trips by a U.S.president.

In my first year in office over 2-million Americans lost their jobs and that trend continues every month

I set the all-time record for most foreclosures in a 12-month period.

I appointed more convicted criminals to administration than any president in U.S. history.

I set the record for least amount of press conferences than any president since the advent of television.

I signed more laws and executive orders effectively amending or ignoring the Constitution than any president in history.
I
presided over the biggest energy crisis in U.S. history and refused to intervene when corruption involving the oil industry was revealed.

I presided over the highest gasoline prices in U.S. history and refused to use national reserves as past presidents have done.

I have cut health care benefits for war veterans and support a cut in duty benefits for active duty troops and their families -- in war time.

I have set the all-time record for most people worldwide to simultaneously protest me in public venues (15 million people) shattering the record for protest against any person in the history of mankind.

I've dissolved more international treaties than any president in U.S.
history.

I've made my presidency the most secretive and unaccountable of any in U.S. history.

I'm proud that the members of my cabinet are the richest of any
administration in U.S. history.

My "poorest millionaire," Condoleeza Rice, had a Chevron oil tanker named after her.

I am the first president in U.S. history to have almost all 50 states of the Union simultaneously suffer massive financial crisis.

I presided over the biggest corporate stock market fraud of any market in any country in history.

I am the first president in U.S. history to order a preemptive attack and the military occupation of a sovereign nation, and I did so against the will of the United Nations and the world community.

I created the largest government department bureaucracy in the history of the United States.

I set the all-time record for biggest annual budget spending increases, more than any president in history.

I am the first president in U.S. history to have the United Nations remove the U.S. from the Human Rights Commission.

I am the first president in U.S. history to have the United Nations remove the U.S. from the Elections Monitoring Board.

I removed more checks and balances, and have the least amount of
congressional oversight than any presidential administration in U.S.
history.

I rendered the entire United Nations viewpoints irrelevant.

I withdrew the U.S. from the World Court of Law.

I refused to allow inspectors access to U.S. "prisoners of war" (detainees) and thereby have refused to abide by the Geneva Convention.

I am the first president in history to refuse United Nations election
inspectors (during the 2002 U.S. election).

I am the all-time U.S. and world record-holder for receiving the most
corporate campaign donations.

My political party used the Enron private jets and corporate attorneys to assure my success with the U.S. Supreme Court during my election decision.

I have spent more money on polls and focus groups than any president in U.S. history.

I garnered the most sympathy for the U.S. after the World Trade Center attacks and less than a year later made the U.S. the most resented country in theworld, possibly the largest failure of diplomacy in World history.

I am actively working on a policy of "disengagement" creating the most hostile of Israel-Palestine relations in at least 30 years

I am first president in history to have a majority of Europeans (71%) view my presidency as the biggest threat to world peace and security.

I am the first U.S. president in history to have the people of South Korea more threatened by the U.S. than by their immediate neighbor, North Korea.

I changed the U.S. policy to allow convicted criminals to be awarded
government contracts.

I set an all-time record for the number of administration appointees who violated U.S. law by not selling their huge personal investments in corporations bidding for U.S. contracts.

I failed to fulfill my pledge to capture Osama Bin Laden, dead or alive.

I failed to capture the anthrax killer who tried to murder the leaders of our country at the U.S. Capitol Building. Even after 18 months I have no leads and no credible suspects.

In the past 18 months following the World Trade Center attack I have
successfully prevented any public investigation into the biggest security failure in the history of the United States.

I removed more freedoms and civil liberties for Americans than any president in U.S. history.

In a little over two years, I created the most divided country in decades, possibly the most divided since the Civil War.

I entered my office with the strongest economy in U.S. history and have turned every single economic category downward

It's not nice to make fun of how anyone looks--even if it is true. A thread got locked yesterday because it made fun of the first lady--and her frumpy appearance. maybe the mods have missed this one--they do get busy here on DU. Stop talking about her ass. Be nice to Barbara Bush--it is not her fault she is propelled into the limelight.

Her fierceness in defending her son--far overboard even for a mother--she is too loud and protests too much and I do not doubt for a second that should anyone say otherwise about her cherished little boy who can do no wrong, she will make a few phone calls herself to Rove and tell him to leak something bad about them.

who had a strong-willed, outspoken mother who bragged about my achievements until I blushed...and then chastised me for minor mess-ups until I blushed even more. That's what mothers do. It did not begin nor will it end with Barbara Bush. If she were a dowagger ol' Dem. we'd be celebrating her "fierce independence" like we did the late, great Bella Abzug.

I realize this is not the time and place to defend any one of the Bushes, but over the weekend a close friend, every bit as progressive as anyone here, admonished me to "hate the policies" but never "the people themselves." Food for thought.

130. HATE = 2008
The price of feeding one's baser instincts is further subjugation. In our haste to hate, we prevent ourselves from connecting with rank-and-file Americans that we need to garner a majority of both the popular vote and the Constitutionally-mandated Electorial College spread over states. Since no one even proposed changing that since 2000, the burden is on the winner to cover a lot of ground. The hateful mindset often seen at DU is not a winning ticket. HATE = 2008.

who was just a year ago a Bush fundraiser and supporter and not even a democrat until weeks after he announced for president, I'm not totally certain her description is wrong.

Rather then discuss an old woman's appearance, maybe it would be more useful to discuss why lifelong democratic public servants are so easily swept aside by an outsider, and why the DNC felt it needed to go outside the party to find their idea of a contender.

recounts meeting the old bat during a Houston/Washington flight early in 2000.
He was engaging in small talk with her about Dana Carvey's impression of her husband and commented "I'm sure he's working on your son." With that her demeanor changed and she actually replied that she couldn't imagine any characteristic of the chimp's that anyone could possibly make fun of. After that she dismissed Franken with a stern "I'm through with you" which she repeated several more times when he tried to determine if she was kidding.

He approached a bunch of people who knew her to get their opinion and determined that the operative word to describe "Bar" is indeed bitch.

can't link because I do not remember where I read this fascinating bit of information. I find that I want to recoil from her image in the same way that I do when I see the Chimp. A sorry lot, huh, how bout those sociopaths you reared in Texas. Can anyone think of even one redeeming quality or one thing she has done that did not serve to advance that family in some way? I can't.

99. Nancy Reagan couldn't stand her
either, not that Nancy's opinion matters to us at DU. But her loathing of Babs was likely based on knowing the real woman behind the media-burnished facade of the kindly grandmother. As some have already noted here, Barbara Bush revealed her true self, her real ugliness with her classless, mean, unwarranted, vicious remark about Geraldine Ferraro in 1984. And she continues to do so now with her ongoing ugly remarks about the Democratic candidates and the loss of life in Iraq. Ugly is as ugly says and does. She makes ugly statements; she bred and raised ugly-acting children. Therefore she is UGLY in every sense of the word.

Gosh, wake me when this ugly Bush nightmare is over.

You made me laugh!

"Barbara Bush revealed her true self, her real ugliness with her classless, mean, unwarranted, vicious remark about Geraldine Ferraro in 1984."

Have you read most DU reponses to EVERYTHING and ANYTHING? Simper if you must about Barbara Bush's language, but far more vile descriptions and images are commonly used here every day. And those of us seeking "classy" dialogue get flamed like Joan of Arc.

I can't stand many things about Barbara Bush but DU has trashed her far more than she has trashed Dems. Others have mentioned a double standrd...well here it is.

How many times have we heard from the right wing media that ex-presidents and their family are supposed to shut up about politics, because it's not proper etiquette to attack other politicians, or some bullshit like that.

Now that the ex-president Bush and his family are on the attack against Democrats, we won't hear a word about etiquette.

109. This is a terrible thread
we should not be doing this. It looks like Freeperville. Barbara Bush is a human being who has lived a long life and has been to far places all over the world when she was a first lady not too long ago. You may not like her, but it is unfair to pick on her now as she reaches old age, and these attacks are not in the best interest of Democrats. Shame on you all. It is not nice to attack an old lady who really has nothing to do with politics as we know it today. She is vulerabole and you are picking on her. Please mods, this thread is just awful--it is not becoming those who are determined Democrats. It is simply the worst thread I have seen here in a while because it is not relevant to today's politics--Barbara is an old lady-- no one knows her limitations at this point and it is cruel to criticize her now in her old age--she does not deserve this hatred--let it go and concentrate on the awfulness of her son.

120. Barbara Bush made a public statement.
Edited on Mon Oct-20-03 09:47 PM by philosophie_en_rose
If we are really to honor seniors, we should give their public statements the same consideration that anyone else in the same position would have. If Mother Theresa stated that dead human beings are not important enough to bother with, it would still be wrong.

It's not an issue that Barbara Bush is proud of her son. It's easy to forgive that kind of blindness. However, it is a problem that she asserts herself as a person whose opinions should matter. I don't think that it's fair to attack her appearance, but it is fair to criticize her hateful speech.

Barbara Bush is not a kindly old woman, nor should she have to be. But I don't think her disgusting comments are a sign of senility. That's just the way that it is and it's impossible to respect.

I think it's monstrous to attack a person's appearance, unless they make an issue of it. I don't think that Barbara Bush should be faulted for looking her age.

However, she is constantly babbling about how great her family is and how sad everyone else is. It's very interesting that she and GHWB represent everything (except economic, racial, or any sort of justice) that the Freepers hate.

Does CNN screen their calls? Probably. In any case, Larry likely won't ask any real probing questions such as these. Which one should I ask 'on the air'...remember, I won't have time to ask more than one before I'm cut off! :-(

* Why did you call the Dems running against your son a "sorry group"? Isn't your own son a 'sorry excuse' for a president...much less a human being?
* Did you ever discipline GW when he was growing up? Why does he have such poor skills re: getting along with others? Why is he so into this 'punishment' thing?
* Did you ever forgive your husband for his extra-marital affairs?
* Why did the Reagans despise you and your husband so much?
* Why is your family so dysfunctional? There has been so much recorded re: crimes of drugs, sex, smuggling, and divorce, etc. Is it your fault or, your husbands? Any regrets?
* Why are you so mean and unforgiving toward your 'enemies'?
* Do you ever go to church? For whom do you pray?
* Do you ever wonder about all of the innocent people your son has murdered?
* If Junior is impeached and / or convicted of war crimes, will you visit him in prison? Will you bring him a home made pie or cake? Do you even know how to cook?
* Do you believe in heaven and hell? Where do you think you and your family will finally end up? Will you be taking all of your money and ill-gotten gains with you?

131. Age has nothing to do with it??
I would guess that Barbara Bush had a nasty temperment as a young girl and I would bet on it that she was a overbearing, nasty military officer's wife. Her nasty remarks on Geraldine Ferraro (sp) and Kitty Dukakis were done openly during the Conventions and campaigns.

Barbara Bush was reared with money, education (although she did nothing with it)and power yet she is totally without any class or compassion. Her age only intensified her nastiness.

Now we have Barbara Bush claiming the Almighty intervened regarding a filial slur on her gastromonic capabilities:

From the UK's Times:

Mr Bush also recalled how George Jr once telephoned to apologise for telling an audience that he used to eat with his family “so long as my mother wasn’t cooking”. Mrs Bush said: “A few months later he got his come-uppance because he choked on a pretzel. I knew that it was a heaven-sent message he should stop knocking his mother’s cooking.”

144. Babs! Do you even LOOK at your boys?
Take a momen from staring googly eyed at your stock portfolio and CONSIDER the scions of your empire:

Bush Family Value$

The Bush clan's family business

by Stephen Pizzo
September/October 1992

In 1991, President Bush bristled at a flurry of news accounts that questioned the business ethics of three of his sons. "The media ought to be ashamed of itself for what they're doing," Bush complained. "They have a right to make a living, and their relationships are appropriate," added a White House spokeswoman in June 1992.

Since George Bush has raised "family values" as a campaign issue repeatedly, though, it seems only fair to take a look at his own family. A computer search showed that over the past five years stories have periodically surfaced chronicling the individual business antics of the president's sons -- each riding comfortably through life in the slipstream of his father's growing power and influence.

Although a handful of good reporters for the New York Times, LA Times, Village Voice, and Wall Street Journal have diligently been digging through business records for months, something has been missing: an overview that "connects the dots" in the myriad deals that have been examined, making it clear that cashing in on influence has become a pattern of behavior extending through the first family.

Instead of criticizing reporters, the president might more wisely begin listening to those in government who have watched his sons with mounting worry. A year ago, I sat across a desk from a Secret Service agent who had been assigned to Bush-family security. I rattled off the names of a half-dozen questionable characters who had found their way into business deals with the Bush boys. How had these characters been allowed to get even close to the president's sons?

The agent slumped back in his chair and sighed. "We warn them," he said in a whisper. "But that's all we can do. We can't stop these kids from associating with someone they want to be with. All we can do after warning them is to sweep these guys with metal detectors when they come around."

153. Another anecdote
from the Newsweek story:

One of the most startling passages in her book is an anecdote about how panicked and vulnerable she felt when she and her husband had to leave the White House. An aide told her she would have to keep a paid staff. “I couldn’t believe my ears. She said Betty Ford... still spent $100 a month on postage alone. I felt like crying.” Though her insecurity seems irrational given her family’s wealth, she writes, “Everyone knew I had never earned any money, as I had never seriously worked in the 48 years we had been married. So besides losing the election, now at 68 I was going to have to work?”

Compare THIS to her idiot son's pathetic record:

Born in Chicago on December 23, 1944, General Clark grew up in Little Rock, Arkansas. In 1962, he graduated from Hall High School, where he led his swim team to the state championship. Always committed to public service, he went to West Point at the age of 17 and graduated at the top of his class in 1966. He also earned a Master's Degree in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics from Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar.

Sorry Bar Bar, but your son is the sorry one in a sorry bunch of spoiled, silver spooned, stupid, alcoholic, Texas rich boy sons.
