Venezuela's Citgo Sets Up Hurricane Relief Centers, Country Plans 1 Million Barrel Gasoline Donation

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) - Venezuela's Citgo Petroleum Corp. has set up disaster relief centers in Texas and Louisiana in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and has begun providing humanitarian aid to thousands of American victims, an official said Monday.

Volunteers at Citgo refineries in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and Corpus Christi, Texas, are providing medical care, food and water to a total of about 5,000 people, Venezuela emergency management director Col. Antonio Rivero told The Associated Press.

Meanwhile, volunteers from the company's Houston headquarters have provided similar help to some 40,000 victims, Rivero said. snip

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has offered to send the gasoline plus US$5 million (euro4 million) in disaster aid and a team of 200 humanitarian workers drawn from a special force of soldiers, firefighters and other specialists.

At the same time, he has sharply criticized the U.S. government for failing to evacuate the victims before disaster struck.

33. What a switch in qualities.
In the post-Reagan era, who'd think that intelligence--rather than simple, craven craftiness--would be so admirable a quality in a politician?

Chavez wears it well.

4. I do think highly of him. He seems to show more Christian charity than
our pResident or leader of the Christian coalition. What have our pResident and Vice pResident done??? Set up photo ops. Release a few oil reserves only after their base, the haves and have mores, said it was ok. Waited five days before sending in troops. I'm sorry but if I were a public official and I didn't act, you can bet I'd never hear the end of it. Just because brush is our pResident doesn't mean he shouldn't be held accountable.

11. Bush is nothing but PR, Chavez is pure substance!
American politics is so corrupt that many Americans find it unfathomable that there are leaders in other countries who are totally altruistic in their motives.

Perhaps it is racism that prevents white Americans from seeing the better virtues in people of color! Chavez is of mixed race, his opponents are European descendants. Bush likes the Chavez opposition because they look more like him!

30. Oh, Come On - This IS PR For Chavez
I mean, it kind of makes me grin at the very idea of him exporting socialism, and to the United States, no less.

I am sure he does care about helping people, but he has to also be enjoying an opportunity to one up Dubya.

16. the SHAME game: Dear President Chavez:
Dear President Chavez:

My, I never knew you were such an important person but it now seems that many poor Americans may be relying on your to assist them with their heating needs this winter. I am hopeful that this kind assistance of yours will not impact on the cost of heating oil offered by some other smaller companies in the US who transport and deliver oil. Is it possible to come to an agreement about the price for such deliveries?

Sincerely,
small time gas delivery company in Western North Carolina

14. Chavez will end up helping more people than Robertson's Operation Blessing
That Radical Cleric, the acting Fuhrer of the Religious Reich, Pat Robertson and his terrorist network "CBN" aka "The 700 Club" has an (alleged) hurricane relief effort going called "Operation Blessing".

I'll bet Hugo Chavez and Venezuela end up helping more people in a more significant way that the Theocratic Nut-Job Robertson.

22. God bless Hugo Chavez! He recognizes the humanity of the poor.
Valuable as the food and fuel and medicine are, even more valuable are the ideas that the Venezuelans bring.

This minute, I really do believe that in the future, the Gulf Coast oil will be used to bring security and prosperity to ALL the people of the Gulf Coast -- just as they're doing now in Venezuela.

Venezuela has Chavez, and who do we get? bush, CNN, FOX, and an infestation of neocons.

God, how I wish there was some way I could funnel my tax money to a country that cares about it's citizens. They would put it to much better use that this criminal administration.

27. Chavez: "The great people of the United States are our brothers"
From his speech at the World Social Forum in Brazil earlier this year:

"One day the decay inside U.S. imperialism will end up toppling it, and the great people of Martin Luther King will be set free. The great people of the United States are our brothers, my salute to them.... We must start talking again about equality. The U.S. government talks about freedom and liberty, but never about equality. They are not interested in equality. This is a distorted concept of liberty. The U.S. people, with whom we share dreams and ideals, must free themselves… A country of heroes, dreamers, and fighters, the people of Martin Luther King, and Cesar Chavez.

...

"Everyday I become more convinced, there is no doubt in my mind, and as many intellectuals have said, that it is necessary to transcend capitalism. But capitalism can’t be transcended from with capitalism itself, but through socialism, true socialism, with equality and justice. But I’m also convinced that it is possible to do it under democracy, but not in the type of democracy being imposed from Washington. We have to re-invent socialism. It can’t be the kind of socialism that we saw in the Soviet Union, but it will emerge as we develop new systems that are built on cooperation, not competition.

...

"Privatization is a neoliberal and imperialist plan. Health can’t be privatized because it is a fundamental human right, nor can education, water, electricity and other public services. They can’t be surrendered to private capital that denies the people from their rights."

26. Hugo Chavez looks at the poor, and sees human beings.
George W. Bush looks at them and sees them as cannon fodder.

George W. Bush feels uneasy around poor people. It's his guilt which makes him fear them. He has no intention to shorten the distance between his base and the suffering poor.

to his coffers.

Value is determined by the size of one's fortune, just as in ancient Rome (and we know what happened to that empire!).
