Syrian Leaders Escalate Verbal Attacks On Israel
Syrian Leaders Escalate Verbal Attacks On Israel
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Israel Insider Monday 20th October, 2003

Syria's armed forces chief of staff, Lt.-Gen. Hasan Turkmani, accused Israel on the weekend of escalation and "seeking to expand the circle of tension and violence." Israel had brought the region to the edge of a volcano that might explode, Turkmani said. Israeli officials rejected the charges and said Israel's only interest was in stopping Syria's support for terrorism. Despite Turkmani's remarks, there were no signs of increased Syrian military activities.

Speaking to Syrian Air Force personnel on Saturday, Turkmani said the Sharon government was "intentionally escalating (the situation), making the region live on the mouth of a volcano that might explode."

Last week, Turkmani was quoted as urging the Syrian army "to continue working night and day, and to remain at the highest levels of readiness, caution and alertness to repulse any possible aggression by the Sharon government."

Syrian leaders have threatened to respond militarily to any further Israeli attacks on Syrian targets. On October 5, Israeli Air Force jets struck at a terrorist training camp near Damascus one day after a female suicide bomber detonated herself in a Haifa restaurant, taking the lives of 21 people.

Asked whether Israel might attack Syria again, Sharon said: "We don't have to declare such things, but the Syrian activity is very serious."

This article is excellent on summarizing the events of the week and how the US and ISRAEL has Syria in the targets

Syria does not know what they are getting into to. They'd be wise to shut up before it's too late. Let 'em keep talkin, though...

5. Yes
Syria is the next war on Bush's plate. Syria would be stupid to mess with someone like Bush. There is no telling what he will do.

On a side note, Syria is one of the most disgusting countries in the world. Not to sound ethnocentric, but we, as Americans, have it a lot better than those people do. Syria has some of the worst human rights abuses in the world, and Syria is just a terrible country, simply put.

6. On a side note, you do indeed sound ethnocentric, to use a nice euphemism
More importantly, it doesn't matter what Syria says, the Bush Nazis and the PNAC Crew are still going to attack the country and kill its people, regardless of what it says (or what someone purportedly says that they said). Then PNAC and the Bush Nazis will act indignant when the Syrians hate the U.S. for killing their people.

Perhaps if Syria were given some kind of assistance and were included in U.S. foreign policy instead of being demonized, bombed and sanctioned into starvation and paranoia, it wouldn't be "just a terrible country, simply put," (which is a pretty disgusting generalization, simply put).

7. like what?
Edited on Mon Oct-20-03 02:51 PM by Sesquipedalian
Extra-judicial killings? torture? indefinate detention without charge? a lack of social and economic equality for ethnic minorities?

I fully agree that we shouldn't be supporting anyone who does things like that, but in this context I don't think you really agree when you stop and think about it.

11. Do you really believe states that practice these things..
Should be attacked or at bare minimum not given economic and military support?

15. No I never said that
But I am not going to go stand there as a human shield and defend those kind of practices like some Americans did in Iraq. ;-)

3. Republicans are wanting War with Syria Quote from article
Rep. Ilena Ros-Lehtinen (R-Florida) said, "The Syrian regime has the blood of Americans on its hands. They have scoffed at the requests made by U.S. officials and have intensified their deplorable behavior which threatens U.S. national security interests. Syria has made its choice clear and it has chosen to be with the terrorists."

:bounce: Is this why we will be going into Syria soon because of our fight against Terrorism

of other Dems are supporting sanctions against Syria, just like they supported giving Bush his $87B. In doing so, they are giving strength to Bush, PNAC, and Sharon/Likud. Why are Democrats doing that?

In a word: Israel.

AIPAC and other pro-Israel groups are lobbying heavily for the Syrian sanctions vote, supported by the obedient Dems, and nearly every Republcian, including Tom DeLay. Why are Dems marching in lockstep with Tom Delay?

Don't these idiots realize, that by supporting bills like this (and the $87B Iraq money vote), they are giving Bush/PNAC/Israel more tools to wage war? It will also help Bush's "re-election" efforts, especially if the country is engaged in war when the elections approach.

Why would ANY Democrat support ANYTHING that would help the Bush regime in any way? I keep asking this question, and no one has given me a good answer. If it's support for Israel, then these Dems are selling our OWN nation out, while they "help" another. Seems to me, there's a word for that, as dictated by the Constitution: treason.
