New horrors discovered as search-and-recovery effort goes on

NEW ORLEANS - (KRT) - Ghastly new evidence of Hurricane Katrina's horror emerged Monday night when a sheriff reported the recovery of 22 bodies lashed together around a pole - a desperate, futile attempt to survive the storm.

Sheriff Jack Stephens of St. Bernard Parish, just east of New Orleans, said rescuers found the bodies tied with rope and wrapped around a pole in the tiny village of Violet along the eastern bank of the Mississippi River.

The bodies were found soon after the storm in a flooded area of the village but still haven't been identified, he said. He said he believed they had tied themselves together, one by one, so they could escape the rising water.

The report came on a day when rescue crews still sought the living and the dead, and when New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin shared a grim estimate of Katrina's human toll - as many as 10,000 people dead, though he didn't cite the basis for that statement.

3. I read a report on this site on Saturday that.......
rescue workers, wanting to continue to concentrate on rescuing living survivors instead of recovering bodies, were tying the bodies to poles to secure them so they would be easier to recover when the body count starts.

Many different reports of the same incident. I think this will be the case for a long time to come.

Thanks for posting this.

Edited to add: My husband just told me that he saw something on tv a few days ago that was talking about snipers. They said the snipers weren't firing on those tying the bodies. The story was about the dangers and not about the bodies so they didn't make a big issue about tying the bodies up.

4. How incredibly sad and tragic for these poor people. How sad and
tragic for the rest of us we have "leaders" who allowed this to happen.

7. Reminds me of the story of the nuns and children....
at the orphanage in Galveston during the storm of 1900. Separately, the children might have had a chance to survive, floating away, clinging to whatever debris they could find.

But the nuns, in their best intentions, lashed all the children together with rope and they all died together.
