Sylvania CPA's link to Noe paid political dividends

COLUMBUS — David DiManna’s main qualification for an appointment to a state tax committee wasn’t his work as a CPA, but rather his relationship with Tom Noe.

Mr. DiManna, a Sylvania Republican, has been serving as a Gov. Bob Taft appointee to the Ohio Tax Credit Authority since 1999.

His firm, Plante & Moran, also was the accountant for Mr. Noe’s $50 million rare-coin funds that have been confiscated by the state after sparking a scandal that has engulfed the Ohio GOP. In the early 1990s, his firm also did some work for another of Mr. Noe’s coin ventures.

Mr. DiManna, during an interview with The Blade last week, said he has spoken with authorities looking into the coin funds, which are under investigation by state and federal agencies. He would not comment further on his role in the inquiries into the state’s failed investment.

“I really derive anything other than satisfaction of public service,” he said after a meeting of the board Aug. 29. “Mr. Noe asked if I would have an interest in taking that position.”
