Bush Says He'll Find Out What Went Wrong (* Leads Investigation)
http://www.breitbart.com/news/2005/09/06/D8CERF180.html

Buffeted by criticism over the federal response to Hurricane Katrina, President Bush said Tuesday he will oversee an investigation into what went wrong and why _ in part to be sure the country could withstand more storms or attack.

Bush also announced he is sending Vice President Dick Cheney to the Gulf Coast region on Thursday to help determine whether the government is doing all that it can.

"Bureaucracy is not going to stand in the way of getting the job done for the people," the president said after a meeting at the White House with his Cabinet on storm recovery efforts.

"What I intend to do is lead an investigation to find out what went right and what went wrong," Bush said. "We still live in an unsettled world. We want to make sure we can respond properly if there is a WMD (weapons of mass destruction) attack or another major storm."

45. It's on Yahoo too.
It's a real AP report.

We need to work up massive outrage on this or it will go down like this.

Don't let the lies go unanswered on mixed boards and make sure people know how unfair it is.

Bush is the man that on Saturday (Sept 3) told the world that Blanco had not yet declared and emergency when she had declared it on August 26.

"And the reason it's important is, is that we still live in an unsettled world. We want to make sure that we can respond properly if there's a WMD (weapons of mass destruction) attack or another major storm. And so I'm going to find out over time what went right and what went wrong," he added.

over time???? that means dragging his feet, sweeping things under the rug, white washing to be done

couple of questions to ask the few bush supporters out there --

***if reporters got into the area why couldn't rescue workers?

***how safe do you feel now? If a "terrorist" attack occurs - how long will it take FEMA to 'respond'?

98. Even this declaration of leading an investigation warrants analysis.
WHY would *he* need to lead the commission?

Why didn't he lead the post-9/11 commission?

Why is he calling for an immediate investigation here, but he didn't for 9/11?

Aside from the simple fact that he should recuse himself, since it was his agencies that will be primarily investigated. His leading any investigation is just nonsense. So it will be interesting to see whether the news media underscores the ridiculousness of Bush leading any investigation into the disaster. It will be an early bellweather on whether the media is reverting to their previous slumber.

100. But the great thing is... Bush declaring he would lead an investigation...
... has now opened the door to having an investigation.

Congressional leaders now need to publicly agree with Bush's call for an investigation, but make the straightforward case for why the investigation must begin immediately(2) and why it must be independent(1).

(1) The need for independence is obvious. Just as a judge *should* recuse himself on cases in which he has a relationship with any of the parties involved, the Katrina Commission must be independent of Executive and Congressional influence, since these branches played a direct role in the funding, staffing and coordination of FEMA and other related agencies. Bush should no more lead the investigation than Gov. Blanco or Mayor Nagin.

(2) The investigation needs to start as soon as possible, in order to begin collecting information. However, it must be defined at the inception of the investigation, that the investigation, within defined parameters, *must* take a backseat to continuing recovery efforts. (e.g. commission testimony sessions should be secondary to coordinating relief, but testimony must be arranged within a reasonable period of time)

102. ABC News, on Monday night, actually did a segment on FEMA Brown's...
... lack of credentials. They stopped short of overtly criticizing Bush for having appointed such an underqualified candidate, leaving that to the viewer.

"9 years as director of a horse association"

"college roommate to the previous FEMA director, Allbaugh"

(ABC *did* neglect to mention that Allbaugh didn't have any experience, either.)

55. MISSING bureaucracy is the problem. He gutted FEMA.
This guy takes the cake. The problem isn't the simple absence of a plan and people to carry it out. The problem is somehow government bureaucracy. No matter what station you choose on the Bush radio, you get the same music. I think the radio is busted.

58. But he's not the President anymore.
For most of us he never was. A fateful few days in the Gulf Coast has damaged the illusion of his presidency beyond any hope of Rovian restoration. The myth of “President Bush” was finally blown away by a Category 4 hurricane and a Category 5 fuck up.

He will no doubt continue the charade for a time, but his entreaties to cut more taxes, suck it up and go shopping will go over like dirty jokes in a sermon. His legacy is fixed in the grisly images of Katrina’s hapless victims and the lame excuses of his incompetent political appointees. We won’t forget his victims in Iraq, but this will be the abuse of trust that will mark his presidency.

He should return to the White House, dog in hand, and await the decision of an enraged nation. No more sales trips, no more banners and no more phony dialogues with America. The Bush agenda has gone to the bottom of the bayou. Hopefully the decision to terminate his disastrous presidency will come swiftly and with near unanimity. Cheney’s dereliction of duty will have to be punished in a similar fashion once he is found. We have some really hard work ahead and a real president will be sorely needed. I think we can work this out.

69. The new theme is that it is the fault of bureaucracy.
It isn't local government, per se, although they will go after local governments and blame local officials where they can. Again and again in the past week ( and for months before this) I have heard "Government will do its part" and then he goes into some song and dance about people being responsible or neighbors helping neighbors. Government will do its part - WTF? How about government will do its JOB.
What they are really after is the dismantling of the Federal Government itself. Well, dismantling isn't quite the word. Actually, it is. My take is that they are going to do two things. The first is to outsource and privatize, quite literally, the entire system - and this means schools, prisons, flood control, social security, all of it. And the means to get there is to be so bloody incompetent, or slow, or half-measured that they can then turn around and say "see, federal government is not working, and it is the bureaucracy that is at fault." Hence the new refrain of "bureaucracy" standing in the way of the "the people." The second step is to institutionalize legally the privatization process. See the recent SCOTUS decision on developers, for all intents and purposes, seizing private property for economic developmentand tax benefits. Remember, this is the same pResident who said that this was, in some ways a tremendous opportunity for the development of the Gulf Coast. As a side note: I was in a bar with two friends, and it was noisy, and in the middle of Bush's "speech," one of my friends said "did that motherf***er just say it was an opportunity to develop the golf course." No, but he might as well have.

I don't know what's worse - the idea of George W. Bush leading an investigation into anything (face it, when the USA is finally rid of him as the supposed President, no successor, whether Republican or Democrat, will ever call on him to do anything. I wouldn't trust him with ceremonial scissors to open a supermarket); or that he thinks he can lead an investigation into a matter in which he has already been blamed more than anyone else?

God, he can't even read a 2 page summary of something - how the hell will he be able to research something?

79. Bush has the most crucial evidence against him to put him away
But did we really think this was going to be easy, or that he wouldn't go without a fight? If no one does anything it is possible bush can get away with this. News reporters showing direct anger at the president, people stressing their anger and Bush's callousness on air or in blogs, aren't doing this to magically make it better! We the american people have to stand up and they're trying to give us the extra push. We can't just wait for the roulette to land on the impeach bush slot, we have to put up a voice and try to do something.

Even with anger from democratic leaders, I've yet to see a strong attack geared at making him confess to his crimes. Infact the democratic speakers on different segments like on msnbc are even having a good laugh with bush aides and it sickens me. We always act like we have something up our sleeve, but so far all I have yet to see is more sleeve. It's time to stop pulling our punches and letting bush get away with avoiding this disaster and using it to gear the supreme court, and start doing something.

Bush obviously isn't going to damn himself and impeach himself, and if he's leading the investigation we need to urge our leaders to strike, or do it ourselves. America is bleeding, with the deaths of many people and animals alike gaping in the wound, what's needed more than hope is initiative. If we don't put bush away now, he'll never go away. He and his family will ride this through until they pretend they were the heroes of our country, and I personally don't want to see that happen. But I no longer believe I can just sit out and it will go away on its own. I just hope america soon sees that, that even outrage alone can't remove evil, and 'evil can only triumph when good people do nothing'.

We're told this isn't the time to place blame. If that's their only retort this IS the time to assign blame, perhaps the only time. While the media still cares, while america still cares. They showed us the horror, they gave us the truth, it's time to use it to protect ourselves from a corrupt government. If we don't do this now, I doubt we ever will.

106. The Democrats aren't doing much better
Before demanding any answers, the Democrats conceded. The Dems are calling for a "bipartisan" investigation. That means that criticizing the Chimp forces is "partisan" and therefore the wrong thing to do. That means its only fair for the investigation to start out giving everyone from the state, local, and federal levels equal blame, otherwise its "partisan." The Republicans will be "bipartisan" by telling lie after lie and smearing anybody who questions them. They are already smearing Celine Dion for voicing her opinion. The right even has time for trivia like that? Once again the Dems have Bush leaning against the ropes and they bring him water and smelling salts.

Hillary and others are asking for a commission to be set up. That will delay everything for months. By then GOP spin will be ingrained in the public's mind and nobody will be watching.

There is nothing wrong with something being partisan. That's how the system is supposed to work. The parties police each other. The partisan bickering that goes on is what gets the truth out, or it would if our side showed up.

I don't remember any "bipartisan" investigations of Bill Clinton. I do remember how the 9/11 commission avoided asking about Bush calling off the hunt for Bin Laden before 9/11 or more importantly, asking why Bush called anything measures against terrorism "swatting at flies." The right did have the chance to smear Jamie Gorelick.

He shouldn't be allowed anywhere NEAR an investigation, except IN THE HOT SEAT, UNDER OATH, FOR HARD NON-STOP QUESTIONING - ALONE!

This will be the ultimate test for the Dems, I fear.

If they cave in again to this one - plus the added insult of LIEberman leading another one, there will be NO reason in hell for me to vote for them - NONE!

At least nobody can argue that bunkerboy doesn't have big, fat, smelly fucking BALLS to do this!

109. Cheney Called In As Bush Says He Will Lead His Own Inquiry Into Katrina
Cheney called in as Bush says he will lead his own inquiry into Katrina

Julian Borger in Washington
Wednesday September 7, 2005

President Bush, facing a political crisis over the government's handling of relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, announced yesterday that he would lead his own investigation of what went wrong.

Mr Bush also declared that he was sending Vice-president Dick Cheney to the ravaged Gulf coast region to assess recovery operations, and remove "any bureaucratic obstacles that may be preventing us from achieving our goals".

The announcements, made after a cabinet meeting in the White House, reflected anxiety that the humanitarian crisis remained grave and that the political threat to the Bush presidency's legacy and second-term agenda was growing, as more details emerged of the failure of Washington's immediate response to the disaster.

If people disliked him before, let me tell you, they
utterly DESPISE him now. There are no more excuses.
People, maybe this is the one that topples them.

When I think of the hundreds of THOUSANDS of people
who have died because of him, I become ENRAGED!!

Who's in charge would be a good one to start off with. What are their qualifications?

Bush resists immediate probe into Katrina response

By Steve Holland Tue Sep 6, 5:23 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -
President George W. Bush pledged on Tuesday to review what went wrong in the initial response to Hurricane Katrina but resisted any immediate probe and lawmakers launched an investigation of their own.

Partisan tempers flared, the projected cost of Katrina recovery efforts mushroomed and
Pentagon leaders denied there was any delay in the military response to the relief effort last week.

After a Cabinet meeting on the myriad challenges posed by his biggest crisis since the attacks of September 11, 2001, Bush said he would lead an investigation into what went wrong. But he said he first wanted to save lives and solve problems before assessing blame.

"I think one of the things that people want us to do is to play a blame game," Bush said of critics of the initial administration response. "We've got to solve problems. There will be ample time for people to figure out what went right, and what went wrong."
