Administration looking to help schools absorb kids displaced by Katrina

President Bush says the administration is looking at ways to help schools absorb students displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

During a meeting with Education Secretary Margaret Spellings, the president said local school districts are extending "extaordinary efforts" right now to help kids learn.

Bush said he's sending his wife Laura to DeSoto County, Mississippi, tomorrow to talk to school officials about their problems.

Houston ISD is taking in quite a few students from New Orleans. The call is out for teachers--retired, etc. And some schools scheduled to close may stay open.

Other Texas districts are doing the same. When Governer Perry made the announcement, he said the schools would need to adjust. No mention of the endless fighting over the education budget that has crippled our schools. No mention of extra funds for the schools.
