Gulf Coast Republicans say investigations should follow recovery, cleanup efforts

...

Republicans insisted that investigations into the slow response by federal and state disaster relief officials should be put off until after the more-pressing recovery and cleanup efforts have been completed.

"I know there are going to be hearings; there are a lot of questions," Sen. Trent Lott, R-Miss., said on the Senate floor. "But please, please, my colleagues, let's don't try to fix blame right now. There'll be a time for that. Let's fix the problems that we've got to deal with now."

Sen. David Vitter, R-La., said Congress should move forward in a bipartisan way to fund the relief, cleanup and redevelopment effort, before moving into the investigative phase. "We'll all be asking a lot of significant questions," he said in a telephone interview from Louisiana.

....

Rep. Jim McCrery, R-La., criticized the Federal Emergency Management Agency for not providing assistance to the non-Red Cross shelters that are housing thousands of evacuees in his northwest Louisiana district. He said only six of the 40 shelters are being run by the Red Cross; the rest are depending totally on volunteers and local governments for shelter, food, water and information.

Working to put Trent Lott on that porch of his fabulous new waterfront home sooner than he gets new white sheets.
