Administration's figures on response don't appear to add up

WASHINGTON - (KRT) - In an effort to show the world that it's finally on top of the catastrophe unleashed by Hurricane Katrina more than a week ago, the Bush administration is producing a seemingly impressive battery of statistics.

Since Friday, as criticism has mounted against the administration for its perceived failure to act sooner, officials have sought to tangibly catalog crucial results, such as "lives saved," "people assisted" and "citizens evacuated."

But a closer look at the administration's claims shows some of the most important numbers seem to contradict each other, including assertions made as recently as Tuesday afternoon about the number of people rescued from life-threatening situations.

In other cases, the numbers seem, at best, to be crude estimates, though they are not presented that way when uttered or released by administration officials.

5. Thank you, Knight Ridder! I also have questions about the #s in TX
Edited on Tue Sep-06-05 09:13 PM by Rose Siding
Perry said Sunday that TX had 220,000, give or take. The NG said, when evac was suspended Sat pm, that they'd been busing up to 1,000 an *hour*. They started sometime Thurs -So up to 48 hours, max.

48,000 or 220,000?

edit- *Not* questioning TX's generosity, just Perry's calculations.

15. Maybe it occured to someone that eventually the people will know
who is here and who isn't, and the numbers of the dead through Bush indifference will STILL come out.

People will turn against the media if they don't start mending their ways now that it will be possible to see how they've been the willing servants of their sociopathic pResident.

This is the test the media will need to pass.

20. Many--the majority--of the "evacuees" that Texas has
accepted drove out on the Sunday before Katrina.

Some came here on Saturday.

Not all come from NOLA. Some come from other places in LA. And Mississippi.

I saw flocks of "evacuees" today, mostly white, some black, in their SUVs, pickups, and cars. They're staying in hotels and in shelters. There's a FEMA center adjacent to the apt. complex I live in. Those 400k+ people that left NOLA ahead of Katrina ... they went somewhere.

Question Texas' generosity. Question Perry's calculations.

But mostly question what an 'evacuee' is.

6. Good Christ, isn't that what this administration does best, tell lies?As a
matter of fact, they even tried to set up a department of misinformatiom.I believe they shut it down when congress, finally, was outraged about something these lunatics have done,

Cooking the numbers and the books is a repug trick way back from Rayguns time.

12. If Bush wants to take credit for "lives saved" in the win column
He should have "lives squandered" recorded in the loss column. The latter will out-weigh the former when all is said and done. Plus, there is no doubt about a corpse.

17. They lie like Soviets
They also know that their figures don't have to add up or their pronouncements even make sense.

They have Fox "News" to cover it up for them, and to blast the airwaves with nonsense until people throw their hands up in confusion otherwise.

21. Lysenko was a botanist who killed Soviet genetics.
And could have caused a famine.

Taught that conditioned traits were inheritable. By growing wheat in ever colder environments, you'd eventually be able to condition it to grow in Siberia, in near-freezing weather.

A crock, of course.

It failed, and then the next big bourgeois science bugaboo was cybernetics and computers.

22. The billions of tax payers dollars
Edited on Wed Sep-07-05 04:01 AM by libodem
allotted by the president for aide will probably end up lining the pockets of Halliburton shareholders and doing very little to aid the people...just like Iraq...millions of dollars will come up missing and nobody will have to account for it....they haven't had to keep honest accountability in Iraq for the dead civilians...why start now, who wants to know, anyway?...whose business it it anyway how many get helped and how?...why should they be accountable?...there is already no limit to their corruption...and already no consequences...no one does audits? no one calls for statistics...I'm sure it's all classified and we the people don't deserve to know...that's because spending taxpayers dollars only matter...that it's wasteful and undeserved charity if it's for health, education and welfare....not if it's contracted out to pay private corporations and arms cartells....edit typo
