Just heard on CBS news ALL FEMA RELOCATIONS STOPPED.
citing evacuees not wanting to go. MA has been preparing for two days now.. FEMA says it might not bring people. (reported by a Boston TV station). Heres the link to the station that reported it... no link to the story yet...

end up in Provo, UT

or anywhere but the Gulf Coast?

A lot of these folks have never been out of New Orleans in their lives. Heck, I am sure that there are those whose families have not been out of the city for generations.

48. I'd probably be dying to go back.
I'd want to go back and just work for room and board to help clean up my city. I wouldn't want to be shuffled off to some concentration camp. I'd want to lend my hands.

Why aren't they recruiting volunteers from these places and 'arming' these people and getting them ready to go in as a huge organized force of volunteeers?

2. Maybe because FEMA can't tell them what happens next.
After all, these people were stranded in the SuperDome, and on highways...just dumped and left.

Maybe they're a touch wary of it happening again.

They want to go home.

10. Agreed. In large part, they probably don't want to go anywhere....
... without knowing the bigger picture. They may feel that they'll get lost in the shuffle when they get moved around, aside from being moved to areas of the country that they'd prefer not to live. (I'm think New Orleans residents wouldn't have a great love for Northeastern winters.)

Also maybe they believe that when they go there home will be subject
to eminent domain seizure for the new Disneyfied New Orleans too.

And in most disasters they keep you close to home. Some of these people don't even know where their kids are.

39. Yep...they need to try to re-establish whatever sense of community
is possible, just in order to heal from such a trauma. How can they do that if they are spread out all over the country?

Probably some worry if they would ever be able to get back home, once sent far away (these are the same people who didn't have enough money to leave, remember).

FEMA really gets an "F" on this.

15. Keep following this

Reports from people in Ceiba, PUerto Rico, indicate that at least 1,000 survivors of Katrina are being brought to the (supposedly closed but still run and restricted by) Roosevelt Roads Navy Base. This has precedence, when Haitian survivors of a hurricane ended up in Ft. Allen, Puerto Rico. The people are kept from the press, and from the civilians outside. And if the survivors don't speak Spanish they will have a hard time communicating even if they can get out.

"God bless us", the mayor warned. :Incomprehensible Reality:

The dangers prompted Mr Nagin to issue an emergency
declaration late on Tuesday, authorising police and military to
remove anyone who refused to leave their homes.

"There are toxins in the water,
gas leaks... We are fighting at
least four fires... It is not safe,"

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4221310.stm

Fears have been realized....

"The right fix is to fire the person who led to 3,000 people dying by making
bad calls," Van Auken said. "That is the right fix. We have the wrong fixes
in place."

"We fought for the commission so we could have a full accounting of how
the attacks could have happened and why they weren't prevented,"
Breitweiser said. "This goes to show that all of our efforts and energies
trying to make the nation safer by having the independent commission give
a full accounting to the American people were futile."

"There are no words to describe our disappointment in our personal
sacrifice getting that commission up and running and in the promises that
were made to us that we would have the real 9/11 story told," Van Auken
said. "None of that has come to pass and that is very sad."

Clouds roll in from the north and it started to rain
Rained real hard and it rained for a real long time
Six feet of water in the streets of Evangeline
The river rose all day
The river rose all night
Some people got lost in the flood
Some people got away alright
The river have busted through clear down to Plaquemines
Six feet of water in the streets of Evangelne

They're tyrin' to wash us away
They're tryin' to wash us away
Louisiana, Louisiana
They're tryin' to wash us away
They're tryin' to wash us away

With a little fat man with a note-pad in his hand
The President say, "Little fat man isn't it a shame what the river has done
To this poor crackers land."

40. Habitat for Humanity is starting a program to build modular housing.
I think they call it, "A House in a Box" because it can be assembled in one city and then shipped to another. (I believe it was the president of Habitat that was talking about this on Larry King this past week.)

Habitat is a great organization, btw. You can access their Katrina response info on their website here:

12. FEMA FAILS
Keeping family groups together is very important. Once they're found, they should be united, ASAP. Setting up location of family members should be automated.

Everyone in FEMA should be carrying a portable notepad computer to write down where each member is in transit and when and where they arrive in relocations centers. All info would automatically go into the database.

They sure could learn something from UPS or FEDEX, huh?

13. Perhaps the evacuees will be more amenable to moving
once they're a little less "shocked and awed."

Perhaps FEMA should ask again in a few weeks. Pictures of the new digs and the environs might be helpful. Finding less isolated sites would also help, I should think. The ability to come and go to at least a large town would help.

However, for those with children, staying in the same school for a year or a semester would be best.

Just heard on CNN: NO schools will not open this year.

out of state with no say as to their destination? Many probably have relatives elsewhere in Louisiana. Others no doubt have friends or relatives throughout the US. Shouldn't the first order of business be to determine which evacuees know someone willing to take them in, and provide them with the means to get to that unique support system?
Temporary shelter must be provided for those without a place to stay, but the location should be determined - to the extent possible - by the individual evacuee. For God's sake, these people have lost everything. And the government seems determined to rob them of their dignity, too.

And where are the checks? When my grandmother's home was flooded in Pennsylvania back in 1972, the feds handed her $5000.00 - a grant, not a loan - on the spot. Many were provided with trailers and families stayed together. It seems to me if we have billions to kill Iraqis, we ought to have the wherewithal to handle this situation without resorting to the forced removal of destitute people to concentration camps.

The government response to this catastrophe makes me ashamed to be an American.

AUSTIN - While the airlift of Hurricane Katrina refugees out of Texas appeared to be on hold, plans to move some to cruise ships in Galveston have also been postponed.

Then federal authorities took over the operation (Unified Command) and by Monday planes still weren't taking off. At the same time, for the first time in days, there were no buses or planes in the official evacuation effort carrying evacuees into Texas, the governor's office said.

It was unclear when any flights might actually leave.

FMEA says: Federal Emergency Management Agency spokesman Dean Cushman said Monday, "We are not coordinating it as of right now

I was just updating the timelime a little hurriedly and tactless. I am not a MOD and the worst that can happen is that the thread is locked or moved. No harm done.

I am on dialup and trying to google the new locations they are using. with accounts in the news. I could see this travesty coming and figured that the more information available the for research here and (we get picked up on google) the better.

I also thought of so many miltary complexes looking like concentration camps and after being left to die in NOLA, and MS I sure wouldn't be trusting FEMA at this point and might do something rash so I thought we might be able to keep an eye on FEMA so they didn't start imprisoning people for PTS reactions.

like something you can just put anywhere and everywhere...without consideration one that they are human....without consideration one that families don't want to be seperated...without consideration one that they WILL want to return HOME to New Orleans eventually.

It's as if it's already fixed in some people's minds that the survivors from New Orleans will just up and move out of New Orleans forever and never go back.

Like they should just leave everything to the wrecking ball and never look back.

They are being treated high-handed and paternalistic. They are being further & further robbed of their human dignity everyday.

I've heard a report of a few survivors ending up in Alaska (on CNNI)

I'm beyond livid.

51. How it should work...
Neighborhoods should be relocated to the same facility or at least the same city, so that community support groups can be somewhat maintained. People who know each other can determine the last known whereabouts of neighbors and loved ones. Temporary instituions like schools and churches can still function, albiet marginally. Dispersing a neighborhood to the four winds only harms the neighborhood's ability to rebuild.
