Iraqi charter 'finalised' says PM
Iraqi Prime Minister Ibrahim Jaafari said the draft of the country's constitution has been finalised after weeks of tortuous negotiations and will be available to the public in a few days.

President Jalal Talabani said the draft had been amended to satisfy the demands of the Arab League, which complained about ambiguity in the reference to the country's Arab identity.

'We have agreed on a text which satisfies the two sides. This text has been added to the constitution,' said Talabani, a Kurd. Iraqi political sources told AFP that language had now been added to specify that 'Iraq is a founder and active member of the Arab League.'

Iraq's draft charter, which must be approved in an Oct 15 referendum, failed to meet demands of Iraq's Sunni Arab minority, who wanted the country declared part of the 'Arab world'.
