Treasury Chief Sees a Jobs Boom, but Most Don't

By EDMUND L. ANDREWS

Published: October 21, 2003

ASHINGTON, Oct. 20 — Expressing a confidence that goes well beyond the projections of many economists, Treasury Secretary John W. Snow has predicted that the American economy will add two million new jobs before next year's elections.
In an interview with The Times of London on Monday, Mr. Snow predicted that the economy would grow at an annual rate of nearly 4 percent over the next year and add about 200,000 jobs a month.
"I would stake my reputation on employment growth happening before Christmas," Mr. Snow said in the interview, which a spokesman confirmed as accurate.

<snip>

But Mr. Snow's could come back to haunt him if job growth continues to be lackluster for much of the next year. Most economists, from those at the Federal Reserve to those on Wall Street, agree that economic growth has already accelerated sharply, but many are skeptical that the job picture will improve much by the time Mr. Bush faces re-election next November.

<snip>

Mr. Snow's boast about job growth could cause heartburn for him and for President Bush if it does not materialize, because Democratic lawmakers and Democratic presidential candidates would almost certainly accuse Mr. Bush of failing to make good on his promises.

3. Where does he see this jobs boom?
Is it under his bed?

A six foot rabbit?

Does it come thru the chimney at Christmas?

Standing on the corner watching all the girls go by?

4. this guy is an idiot
plain and simple. Remember when Treasury Secretaries had gravitas and credibility.

Alexander Hamilton and Bob Rubin have nothing to worry about. Their positions as number one and two Treasury Secretaries of all time will stand.

Sheesh.

7. Do the arithmetic
200,000 more jobs a month til next election day still makes this the first "administration" since Hoover's to lose jobs. That would still be about 1,000,000 lost jobs, wouldn't it? What is this guy bragging about?

But the BFEE and his cabinet must have invaded the middle east for some serious stash.

What else would explain the moronic arguments we see daily.

This probably goes back all the way to the pretzel incident. I suspect junior imbibed some serious junk from a special ops raid or something.

Like everything else, these old white guys just can't handle the juice.

sarcasm off

15. BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
From your link:

Lowering the bar

On October 21, The New York Times reported that Treasury Secretary John Snow projected that the economy will generate two million additional jobs, about 200,000 per month, before next year’s election. This new number is a huge retreat from the administration’s previous projection made when it was selling its tax cuts. In February the Council of Economic Advisers projected 344,000 per month job growth starting in mid-2003 if the tax cuts were passed and roughly 250,000 jobs created per month without the tax cuts.

Monthly job creation of 200,000 and maintaining unemployment at its current level is far from a satisfactory economic performance. It takes 170,000 new jobs each month just to provide jobs for an expanding population and workforce and 300,000 new jobs each month to lower the unemployment rate by one percentage point over the course of a year.

MORE. . .

Ha, they can't even get their own chest-thumping bombastic statements straight, whatta bunch of grade-A MORANS.

9. Crafty little devil !
There is ALWAYS an increase in TEMPORARY LOW WAGE RETAIL JOBS before the holidays. Sure, he can take that one to the bank.

The future is looking more and more like Elliot's "The Waste Land" with every passing day.

but the Bushidas don't care about the economy.
The only thing that could hurt them would be an oil glut.

Whistleass had previously stated 1 million new jobs, Snow just upped the "bid" to 2-million.... do I hear 2.5 million new jobs? Going once.. going twice....

....meanwhile - how long before Whistleass Inc. slams a plug into Snow's mouth to shut him up?

16. Time for a redesign..
on the $20 name with a new Treasury Boob du Jour. First it was O'Neill with his name on the last redesign on the $20, now the "colorful" $20 waste of ink is John Snow, and next year, with even more waste of ink and cash, will be the boob du jour.

18. Wow - he's predicting job growth before Christmas!
Gosh, how's THAT for a bold prediction! Did he also go out on a limb and predict job losses after Christmas?

Nothing but the same old shit we've been hearing from these clowns for the past 2.5 years.
