(snip) Bush and Fox find the going to be slow
Meeting is friendly, but few gains are reported on immigration issue

10:48 PM CDT on Monday, October 20, 2003

By G. ROBERT HILLMAN / The Dallas Morning News

BANGKOK, Thailand – President Bush and Mexican President Vicente Fox sought to patch up their strained relationship Monday in a private meeting before the start of the annual Asia-Pacific economic summit and to move forward on the thorny border issues of trade and immigration.

"It was a relaxed and really warm discussion, and they're looking forward to meeting again," said Mr. Bush's national security adviser, Condoleezza Rice, though she offered no meeting date.

To set the stage for Monday's meeting, Ms. Rice said, Mr. Bush telephoned Mr. Fox several days ago, "simply to say, 'I'm looking forward to seeing you. What happened has happened.' " (snip)

(snip) Then, Mr. Bush and Mr. Fox met with reporters. But Mr. Bush appeared restless, impatient and sometimes frustrated with the Spanish-to-English translation, saying, "I understood what he said." (snip/...)

5. Fox speaks better English, too
I heard him interviewed a few months ago. He spoke slowly, chosing his words carefully.

But he chose the right words.

3. "restless, impatient, and...frustrated..."
Sounds like a child in need of a nap -- not an adult, let alone a President.

10. Hook'em Horns?
Is that the University of Texas "Hook'em Horns" hand sign (like the Atlanta Braves tomahawk chop)? The UT mascot is a Texas longhorn.

11. Did he pound the table to express his translation frustration?
Oh, I forgot - table pounding is reserved for members of his own party serving in the Senate - my bad!
