Apparent Hunter S. Thompson suicide note published

Renegade author Hunter S. Thompson lamented the onset of old age and his physical limits, then concluded, "Relax -- This won't hurt," in an apparent suicide note published on Thursday by Rolling Stone magazine, his literary springboard.

The scrawled words -- perhaps the last he ever committed to paper -- were written on February 16, four days before the self-described "gonzo" journalist shot himself to death at his secluded home near Aspen, Colorado, the magazine said.

...

The brief message, scrawled in black marker and titled "Football Season Is Over" (an apparent reference to the end of the NFL season he avidly followed as fan), reads as follows:

"No More Games. No More bombs. No More Walking. No More Fun. No More Swimming. 67. That is 17 years past 50. 17 more than I needed or wanted. Boring. I am always bitchy. No Fun -- for anybody. 67. You are getting Greedy. Act your old age. Relax -- This won't hurt."

At the bottom of the page, Brinkley said, Thompson drew a "happy heart," the kind found on Valentine's Day cards.

4. Sounds like Hunter to me
Every time the current situation (Bush and his fellow scumbags or what not) gets me down I think of Hunter and know that true freedom loving people really can exist. Fuck George Bush, that little creep. Hunter S. Thompson is a true American hero! Freak power!

5. I'm 60 and I plan to carry on for years yet
since I piss off the local repugs just by being around. I also have numerous projects I haven't finished.

6. I have "Generation Swine." Found it at a thrift store.
Is it worth reading for someone who's never read one of his books before?

9. Yes, it is worth reading, but don't stop there
...make sure you get "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas", then maybe one of the collections of short articles like "The Great Shark Hunt", and "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail"

14. I have used his "Hell's Angels" as a guide to teaching nonfiction...
writing. It is flawless. And in many ways, his finest work.

10. Anyone who has lived with chronic pain and/or disability knows what
he was feeling when he wrote this part: "No More Walking. No More Fun. No More Swimming."

Nobody who has not lived with chronic pain and/or disability can understand it.

But we do. We've all been to that brink at least once. We've all looked over that cliff. Most of us have stepped back from the edge, but for some, the siren call of painless oblivion is too sweet to resist...Rest in peace, HST and all others who answered the call.
