Cherie chides Muslims over women's rights
Cherie chides Muslims over women's rights
From Greg Hurst, Political Correspondent, in Delhi

CHERIE BLAIR has risked offending Muslims by criticising the way in which Islam is used in many societies to keep women in check.

Mrs Blair told a group of Indian journalists in Delhi that attitudes towards women in some Muslim societies were out of date and needed to change. She urged Muslims to embrace more modern attitudes to sex equality.

Mrs Blair, a human rights lawyer with a long-standing interest in women’s issues, was accompanying her husband on a four-day visit to China and India. She made the remarks at a private lunch for the Indian Women Press Corps, where she also revealed her childhood dreams of marrying an Indian prince. Although she has largely avoided the British media during the visit, and British officials have refused to discuss her programme, reporters present said that she moved from table to table to talk with them in groups.

At one table, Mrs Blair spoke of how as a Christian she was fascinated by Islam and thought there was much good about it. But after she was asked about the London bombings she said: “The religion has a deep philosophical base but there are misinterpretations by some groups in some parts of the world about women that I have a problem with.”

1. Oh that should go over well
like da bomb, you might say.

if you're going to criticize the culture of one billion people living in another region of the world, and believe me I sympathize with the criticism, it's best to do it in your own home--knowhatimean?

2. If Cherie feels the need to chide someone
about the now-defunct rights of certain women, she should look no farther than the warm body next to hers in the bed.

"In most cases I support my husband’s policies but if I were to say that everything my husband did was excellent or good then it would mean either he is a saint or I am subservient. I am not subservient.”

Iraqi women didn't used to be subservient either, but they can thank Tony, in part, for the fact that they are now.

4. Now that you mention it, Yup.
I understand Tony wants to convert. But in his case I think it's because he knows he desperately needs absolution. I hope somebody tells him he has to undo the evil he's done in order to get it.

5. Cherie, dear, why don't you get that war criminal of a husband
of yours to stop murdering the women and children of the people you are trying to reform? Your message might be taken more seriously if you were to do so.

7. As well she should. Of course...
... creating new Islamist states in the Middle East just might not be the best way of going about creating opportunity and equity for women.

And come to think of it... it's getting a bit theocracy-y around here these days, too..

8. This issue can't be brought up enough
I don't care if it's Cherie Blair or the Man in the Moon, but there are many Muslim countries that follow strict interpretations of the Koran, and their women are no better than cattle - and not even as good as cattle in some other countries.

Like the Fundies, they justify this as the will of God, as it was written, etc. etc. blah blah. Absolute pure religious horseshit.

9. Good for her -- this is a life and death issue for women.
Edited on Fri Sep-09-05 04:39 PM by DELUSIONAL
Meanwhile in the US the christian fundies want to impose their own version of jail all women.

Ionic that ALL fundamentalist consider women evil and use various ways to dehumanize women -- from the black shrouds to turning women into baby machines.

It always amazes me how some of the "liberal" males think it is not correct to criticize the what other cultures do to HALF of their population based on the gender of the population. This issue always brings out the latent sexist males.

10. Hear, hear.
You've got that right. But it's not just males, some of the women jump on the "cultural tolerance" bandwagon as well.

11. yes -- you are correct some women are just as bad
about -- oh gee, it's their "culture" now just leave them alone.

For instance -- female genital mutilation -- or as some call it female "castration" -- I've heard -- oh leave them alone -- it's their culture.
