FEMA Chief Relieved of Katrina Duties
WASHINGTON - Federal Emergency Management Agency Director Michael Brown is being removed from his role managing Hurricane Katrina relief efforts, The Associated Press has learned.

Brown is being sent back to Washington from Baton Rouge, where he was the primary official overseeing the federal government's response to the disaster, according to two federal officials who declined to be identified before the announcement.

Brown will be replaced by Coast Guard Vice Adm. Thad w. Allen, who was overseeing New Orleans relief and rescue efforts.

Brown has been under fire because of the administration's slow response to the magnitude of the hurricane. On Thursday, questions were raised about whether he padded his resume to highlight his previous emergency management background.

3. FEMA Director to Be Out Soon, Sources Say
Sept. 9, 2005 — Federal Emergency Management Agency director Michael Brown, under criticism due to his management of Hurricane Katrina as well as reported discrepancies on his resume, is expected to be out as head of the agency very soon, informed sources have told ABC News.

Brown had virtually no experience with emergency management when he was appointed to the position by President Bush two years ago.

Brown was a friend of Joseph Allbaugh, a former Bush campaign manager who directed FEMA from March 2001 to March 2003. Brown was the deputy chief of FEMA in 2001 and moved up when Allbaugh left.

Before becoming part of the agency, Brown was a top official of an Arabian Horse Association. The secretary of that association says it asked him to resign in 2001.

88. It will wind up being that - as long as we sit back and do nothing.
Please contact CNN - www.cnn.com/feedback, and MSNBC - http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3303518/ and urge them not to roll over and go back to sleep now that it seems as though the problem's been solved. This guy hasn't been fired. Nor has his supervisor, michael chertoff. Nor has THEIR boss, bush. If you'd performed this poorly on your job, would YOU still be working? I guess in this case, the White House must think it's the Boston Archdiocese or something. Just move the offender somewhere else, safely out of range, and the problem will just go away.

157. Isn't he staying with FEMA until Bush promotes him?
Isn't he just being relieved of his Katrina responsibilities?
Isn't he still drawing salary in the 6 digits(supported by our taxes)?

This is just so Dubya can take the heat off himself. Make it look like he is making someone accountable for all the dead people.

Brownie is still on the payroll. Brownie has not lost his job. Brownie has not lost his head. Brownie just doesn't have to do the dirty work of cleaning up the mess he and his bosses let happen.

Brownie, you're doing one heck of a job keeping your job.

IMHO if they are going to keep him, he should be out there in the field doing the dirty work like recovering bodies.

People who fail or under-qualified are hired and promoted by the Bush Adm.

Condi Rice: Cheer leader of Iraq war ignored warnings of 9-11; now heads

Paul Wolfowitz: Architect of Iraq war now at World Bank
Donald Rumsfeld: shakes Saddams hand; head disaster of Iraq War

Brown will be promoted and probably be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.

judgment.

Appointing Brown was a HUGE fuck-up by Bush, total lack of judgment.
Appointing Brown was blatant example of Bush rewarding political cronies.

Brown will fall on his sword, a la Tenet, probably get a Congressional Medal of Freedom for slinking off silently,
BUT BUSH WILL NEVER BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR HIS LACK OF JUDGMENT IN APPOINTING THE IDIOT IN THE FIRST PLACE.

167. Brown was given his job by Bush himself
Joseph Allbaugh & Brown were college roommates.

When Brown got fired from his last job (w/horses), Allbaugh gave his old friend a job at FEMA.

Allbaugh then left FEMA to work full-time on Bush's campaign.
He recommended Brown take his place.

Bush then nominated Brown to take over from Allbaugh as the head of FEMA.

Yes, there was a recommendation from Allbaugh to hire his friend as his replacement, but it was up to Bush to give him the job.

In any case, we have incompetent cronies running our gov't with no qualifications other than they are all in the "good ole boy" network.

Poor us.

An appointment of this importance may have even required Bush's signature. If the media is on the job, we will get these details. In any case, it wouldn't absolve Bush. The chief executive has to be on top of these things.

Will "run FEMA from Washington."

Replacement is coast guard admiral.
This is how they "fire" him without actually "firing" him.
If they really canned him that would be tantamount to admitting an error and they are just not able to do that.

NBC: FEMA chief relieved of Katrina duties
Report follows controversy over Brown’s qualifications, agency’s response

MSNBC News Services
Updated: 1:20 p.m. ET Sept. 9, 2005
WASHINGTON - Federal Emergency Management Agency Director Michael Brown is being removed from his role managing Hurricane Katrina relief efforts, NBC News and The Associated Press reported Friday.

Two federal officials who wouldn't be identified told the AP that Brown is being sent back to Washington from Baton Rouge, La. He was the primary official overseeing the federal government's response to the disaster. NBC learned the same thing from a relief official.

FEMA has been criticized for its response to the disaster, and Time magazine on Friday reported that Brown’s official biography overstated his emergency-management experience.

(I agree, it's about damn time!)

US emergency aid chief sidelined

The top US emergencies official is being removed from his role managing the Katrina relief effort, agencies report, quoting unnamed US officials.

Friday, 9 September 2005, 18:01 GMT 19:01 UK

Michael Brown, director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, is being sent back to Washington from Louisiana where he has been overseeing aid work. Mr Brown has faced strong criticism over the pace of the rescue effort.

Allegations that Mr Brown was not properly qualified for his post recently surfaced in the US media.

According to the unnamed officials, Mr Brown is being replaced by Coast Guard Vice Adm Thad W Allen, who has been overseeing New Orleans relief and rescue efforts. The officials added that Mr Brown was not being removed from his job as Fema director "at this time", AP news agency reports.

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff took the decision to move Mr Brown, the sources said.

119. Brownie's resume:
here ya go - it's quite damning:

When President Bush nominated Michael Brown to head the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in 2003, Brown's boss at the time, Joe Allbaugh, declared, "the President couldn't have chosen a better man to help...prepare and protect the nation." But how well was he prepared for the job? Since Hurricane Katrina, the FEMA director has come under heavy criticism for his performance and scrutiny of his background, and Friday was relieved of his duties handling the disaster response. Now, an investigation by TIME has found discrepancies in his online legal profile and official bio, including a description of Brown released by the White House at the time of his nomination in 2001 to the job as deputy chief of FEMA. (Brown became Director of FEMA, succeeding Allbaugh, in 2003.)

Before joining FEMA, his only previous stint in emergency management, according to his bio posted on FEMA's website, was "serving as an assistant city manager with emergency services oversight." The White House press release from 2001 stated that Brown worked for the city of Edmond, Okla., from 1975 to 1978 "overseeing the emergency services division." In fact, according to Claudia Deakins, head of public relations for the city of Edmond, Brown was an "assistant to the city manager" from 1977 to 1980, not a manager himself, and had no authority over other employees. "The assistant is more like an intern," she told TIME. "Department heads did not report to him." Brown did do a good job at his humble position, however, according to his boss. "Yes. Mike Brown worked for me. He was my administrative assistant. He was a student at Central State University," recalls former city manager Bill Dashner. "Mike used to handle a lot of details. Every now and again I'd ask him to write me a speech. He was very loyal. He was always on time. He always had on a suit and a starched white shirt."

Bush will ask for yet another do-over from the American people and try to lay the blame on Brown just like he did with Tenet. This is not Brown's fault. Bush hired a horse association man. He could have just as easily hired the horse he milks every morning to head FEMA. and it wouldn't have been the horse's fault This is Bush's fault. The executive and managerial hiring decisions of the President are his responsibility. Bush himself proudly proclaims that he's a delegator. If he can't even be held responsible for how he delegates then there's no action for which he can be held accountable.

Now they are trying to say that Brown lied on his resume. I don;t think anybody even looked at it - it was a patronage job as we all know - but who is more to blame? A loser like Brown who stumbled into luck - or the guy who allowed him to be hired - George W. Bush?

Also - is anyone in the media looking into the backgrounds of any other department heads to see it this exists there? MAybe we can do something about it before thousands of peole die as a result of that mistake.

they have done yet. A few days ago, the questions regarding Brown's resume padding comes out. Now he is being sent back to Washington. Next he will be canned. Big Deal. Maybe Allbaugh takes a few hits ( but he is now in private sector so that is all). And all of the right-wing pundits, much of MSM and, the ever-ready bunnies over at Faux News get to play three new themes. Theme one, of course, is Bush was betrayed by his underlings. Remember during the debate? What is your biggest screw-up George? "Well, gosh-a-roonie, I appointed some folks who weren't what I thought and who let me down. I mean, this guy lied on his resume." Theme two is, see, he is really a take charge guy, just like on 911. Takes him time to get past the bureaucrats but blah blah blah. And then the third theme. And they have been playing this for awhile. You know, it is all that bureaucracy. And he's not gonna let bureacracy get in front of "the people." And they only way to do that is a) privatize the whole thing and b)streamline how government operates. Fucker sounds like Mussolini.
I know some people on DU are questioning reality right now ( did the boy king actually show some minimal leadership and do something right). No. It's okay. You're sane. All this shows is that Karl is back in town and Dirty Dick is done buying real estate.

170. Katrina survivors to march on Washington DC on 9/11
http://rawstory.com/news/2005/Activists_plan_911_Katrin_0909.html

Activists plan 9/11 Katrina protest
Miriam Raftery

Activists are organizing plans for Katrina survivors to march in Washington D.C. on and plan to stage an act of civil disobedience by building an encampment on the Washington D.C. mall on Sept. 11, RAW STORY has learned. The encampment would serve as a center for Katrina activism.

Two websites have been established to support the cause: www.campkatrina.org and www.bushville.org. In the past day, unique hits on Bushville.org have risen from 239 to 3,562, organizers said.

The term "Bushville" was inspired by encampments of homeless people dubbed "Hoovervilles" that sprang up following the Great Depression.

"This site created as an act of spontaneous outrage," the websites read, adding that they were created as, "an act of love and hope for all humans killed or endangered by Bush's gross dereliction." Establishing camps in Washington D.C. will keep America's attention on the "criminal negligence of Bush," the sites asserts.

"I felt that Bush was going to use 9/11 to blindfold us the flag," the activist who posited the Katrina encampment concept, told RAW STORY. He asked that his named not be published. He draws parallels to the Bonus Army, an assembly of 20,000 World War II veterans, families and other groups that demonstrated in Washington D.C. during spring and summer of 1932.

If an encampment is held on 9/11, it would pose a striking juxtaposition to the Freedom March planned by the Pentagon to commemorate the terrorist attacks. Initially, only a handful of hurricane survivors may be bold enough to pitch tents on the Washington D.C. mall. But ultimately, the activist hopes to see thousands of Katrina survivors on Bush's doorstep-remaining through the Congressional investigations into Katrina.

"They will camp in the seat of power and media to demand truth and action," the activist predicted, "for as long as it takes."

A beleaguered Mike Brown said Friday he doesn't know why he was removed from his onsite command of Hurricane Katrina relief efforts, but he does know the first thing he'll do when he returns to Washington.

"I'm going to go home and walk my dog and hug my wife, and maybe get a good Mexican meal and a stiff margarita and a full night's sleep," Brown told The Associated Press. "And then I'm going to go right back to FEMA and continue to do all I can to help these victims."

Kinda funny how old "heck of a job" Brownie padded his resume from "assistant to the city manager" (basically an intern) to "assistant city manager."

Brought to mind a vaguely recalled episode of the BBC version of "The Office," with Gareth introducing himself as "assistant regional manager" which his boss corrected to "No, you're the assistant to the regional manager."

Once again Dubya's dickheads prove there's no such thing as satire any more. It's all too horribly real in this cheneyed-up administration.

Many poor people of course don't HAVE bank accounts.

And can't get them anytime soon because their ID will be missing. How many do you think will know their social security numbers. Banks of course require they have the card when they open the account.

Then there are the poor who have never BEEN to internet, that they have to get to after they open their bank account. Are federal agencys going to set up kiosks for this and show them how?

"You're coming across as a racist and you better be careful with the Mayor's name. You almost said the "N" word by accidentally adding an "R" to his last name (Freudian slip?). You talk so fast without even breathing but you better either not even say his name or slow down. "Your career could depend on it."

I'm so sick of his hate spewing mouth. HE was the first one to politicize this horrible tragedy, and then blamed others for doing it. He accused these people, because they are poor, as being raised with an "entitlement" mentality. The Government had done everything else for them, why hadn't the government gotten them out in time." I guess he has never heard the term, "Working poor."
