Method on Ap-Ipsos Poll on Katrina (Bush Approval Falls To 39%)
Edited on Fri Sep-09-05 03:29 PM by Mark E. Smith
Overall, do you approve, disapprove or have mixed feelings about the way George W. Bush is handling his job as president?

Approve: 39% (was 42%)
Disapprove: 59% (was 55%)
Mixed Feelings: 1% (was 2%)
Not Sure 1%

When it comes to handling the relief effort for Hurrican Katrina, do you approve, disapprove or have mixed feelings about the way GW Bush is handling that issue?

Approve: 46%
Disapprove: 52%
Mixed Feelings: 1%
Dunno: 1%

Disconnect? People don't like Bush anyway, and the Katrina disaster hasn't changed that one way or the other?

Lots more here.

3. you need to look closer....

at the full report.

It has 40% strongly disapprove!

The 39 percent approve is made of three categories: strongly approve, some what approve , and lean toward approve.

all the approval cats put together don't equal the Strongly disapprove.

That sooooo bad! That should be front page news.

So if I stood up on a plane tomorrow and said "I really disapprove of this president" 40% of the people would agree with me.

We got to start making some noise people. People agree with us but the media is all quiet about it.

17. The 40% strongly disapprove is indeed key
It's like in the election horse race polls where they try to determine the "soft" support from the firm support. These 40% need to sign up on DU and we can get this dumbass out of office!

2. I can't believe 46 percent think its okay to stay on vacation
All the hugging minorites and flyovers now are useless and cosmetic. The time to show leadership was in the first 48 hours afterwards.

5. Maybe they think he's doing better now
but they haven't forgotten how bad he was in the beginning. First impressions can be lasting. The drop in overall approval is probably the cumulative effect of a whole bunch of things.

4. A 39% approval still means that out of nearly 185,000,000 voters
...in the U.S., there are some 72,150,000 voters who think that shrub is a POS that is worth keeping in the White House! That says that this number of adult Americans have the same mind-set as the neo-conservative fundamentalists ultra-nazified leaders who pull them around by their noses with their lies and cover-ups.

Bush comments that Trent Lott will get an even better house then the one which was supposedly destroyed by the hurricane and these Bush supporters assume right away that the same will happen for them, so they maintain their approval.

The state of Louisiana out of a total population of 4.5 million persons that lived there before Katrina 32.5% are Black or African American persons.

<link> http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/22000.html

The Federal government has been able to disburse nearly 450,000 families (households) many of whom are minorities and poor out of the state and in many cases thousands of miles away. These are democratic voters. I'd like to know what their approval ratings are of Bush's handling of Katrina so far has been.

6. I have one small problem with that poll
They asked "do you approve of Bush's handling of terrorism and foreign policy issues?" I think the approval was like 43%.

They should have disambiguated terrorism and foreign policy into 2 separate questions. It is well known that the only thing keeping Bush from really falling into very low ratings is his handling of terrorism, where is ratings tend to still be in the low to mid 50's. Foreign policy in general seems to rate fairly low for him. I'd have liked to have seen those questions asked separately.

9. Pretty Fucking Sad, Innit?
The biggest actual effect on Bush's support might turn out to be from the rise in gas prices caused by the storm.

11. How Different Groups Feel About Bush, Storm
<snip> By more than 2 to 1, Americans say the federal government should have been better prepared for a disaster the magnitude of Katrina. Minorities, 83 percent, were more likely than whites, 64 percent, to feel that the federal government should have been better prepared. People who live in cities were more likely than those who live in the suburbs and rural areas to feel that way. <snip>

Just over a third said they felt deeply that the government would have responded faster if the victims weren't mostly black and poor. Almost two-thirds of minorities said they deeply felt that way, while a fourth of whites said they felt deeply that this was the case. <snip>

Almost two-thirds say the country is headed down the wrong track. Those who are the gloomiest include people from 18-29, 77 percent wrong direction; nonwhites, 79 percent; those with a high school education or less, 73 percent; those with low incomes, under $25,000, 69 percent; $25,000 to $50,000, 72 percent; Democrats, 86 percent; non-investors, 72 percent. <snip>

Seven in 10 disapprove of how the president is handling gas prices. Women, 75 percent, were more likely than men, 64 percent, to disapprove of Bush's handling of gas prices. Minorities, 72 percent, were more likely than whites, 43 percent, to strongly disapprove. Those who make less than $50,000 a year were more likely to disapprove than those who make more than $50,000. <snip>

12. Bush approval drops below 40 percent
WASHINGTON - President Bush's job approval has dipped below 40 percent for the first time in the AP-Ipsos poll, reflecting widespread doubts about his handling of gasoline prices and the response to Hurricane Katrina.

Nearly four years after Bush's job approval soared into the 80s after the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, Bush was at 39 percent job approval in an AP-Ipsos poll taken this week. That's the lowest since the the poll was started in December 2003.

20. I am waiting for it to hit 13%.. but this is a good start.
Sad it is the gasoline prices that was bothering so many people before New Orleans, and not the loss of life in Iraq and other tragedies...

21. Near the bottom of the article another nugget of gold:
"The number of people who think the country is on the wrong track grew from 59 percent last month to 65 percent this month. Tumbling consumer confidence after Hurricane Katrina may be contributing to that sense of pessimism."

Well, it probably already is but this is an AP poll, so they've probably jacked the numbers up.
