In Ottawa Friday, China's President and Canada's Prime Minister announced a formal "strategic partnership" between the two countries, while officials signed a number of bilateral agreements on air and rail transport, food inspection, health research and nuclear R&D.

Wonder what the "strategic partnership" bit is about?

the second largest oil reserves in the world (when the Alberta tar sands are factored in).
the largest fresh water reserves in the world. (Thought oil wars were bad? wait for it.)
a lengthy border with the United States. (Imagine the US sharing North America with a less accomodating neighbour.)

12. Last time I checked, Canada was at least in the top 10

of world economies. They are playing it smart - growing their trade surplus by working more with Europe and other regions, so that when the US economy really tanks, it will be easier for them to ride out the storm. Of course the fact that Canada actually has a strong social infrastructure and budget surplus helps their cause as well.
