U.S. thanks Canada for relief efforts
Canadian Press
September 9, 2005

U.S. President Bush offered thanks Friday to Canada and other countries for their "outpouring of compassion" and substantial relief for the countless U.S. victims of hurricane Katrina.

Other Americans, too, are praising the variety of assistance from Canadians and the way it is being delivered. "In this time of struggle, the American people need to know we're not struggling alone," Bush said in Washington during the swearing-in for Karen Hughes, the State Department's new undersecretary for public diplomacy.

"I want to thank the world community for its prayers and for the offers of assistance that have come from all around the world. The outpouring of compassion and support has been substantial."

Bush listed the aid offered by a host of countries, rich and poor alike. Even war-torn Afghanistan has pledged $100,000 US in aid.

"Canada has sent ships with disaster supplies," the president said. "Air Canada's planes assisted in the evacuation."

1. National Post is a right wing newspaper put in place by conrad black
and then sold because it doesn't make money.

Total piece of crap. They don't publish a story that doesn't further the neocons agenda.

This is not what Canadian newspapers & people are saying.

5. Don't post National Post as if it is a real newspaper. It is a neocon
tool. It pretends to be a national paper. It runs at a loss most often. Who would post anything by Faux and not make it clear Faux was not a real news organization if people didn't already know.

I am not saying that Americans are grateful, I am saying, don't bother with the National Post.

9. Yup - I'm not against the story. I'm just pointing out to Americans
that this is the type of story the national post would be filled with this week. Positive to Bush.

It isn't a real newspaper any more than Faux is a real T.V. network. And Americans should know that.

11. It's not really positive to Bush
It just reports his comments and the great work Canada has done in NOLA.

14. People should know what the National Post is. It is a neocon tool.
Americans don't know that - should know it.

I will continue to remind them.

16. I did the same thing today
A person (and I use the term lightly) combatted my information about what is going on by showing me something from the "National Pest". He was quite upset when I looked at the article, saw it was from NP, and without even reading it, filed it in the round file. He was quite upset. I repeat that, because I also told him that the np was NOT a reliable news source. Then he brought up that Fox news said it WAS TRUE!!!11!!. Well, my office mate and I laughed and laughed. He stormed out. Nuff said, eh?

18. But - it will be the exact type of story the NP posts. Other newspapers
reported that our PM was so angry by day 2 or 3 of the flood - that was going to call Bush and ask him why Bush was sitting on his ass.

Canada tops the list for thank-yous from the United States for its response to the Hurricane Katrina tragedy.

President George Bush Friday offered thanks to Canada and other countries for their "outpouring of compassion" and substantial relief for the countless U.S. victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Earlier this week, U.S. Ambassador David Wilkins effusively thanked Canada as well. "The aid pouring from all across Canada has been truly overwhelming," Wilkins said in Vancouver. "Many countries are offering help, nobody more so than Canada...You're at the top of the list and for that we will always be grateful."

In Los Angeles, TV news anchor Hal Fishman of KTLA Channel 5 praised Canada's assistance saying "The country has embraced us and offered support on myriad levels." He said other countries have extended aid, but Canada stands above the rest in terms of types of support and the different sectors which have offered help.

Sometimes one has to jump in front of the parade to be able to keep leading it.

Also known as the education of "Mr. Wilkins".

8. Fuck the Post. Who gives a shit what Bush has to say about anything?
This ain't about George Bush, or his thank-yous. His comments are as irrelevant as he's about to become...

It's about our neighbors. Period. THAT'S the word on the street in Canada...

3. Thanks, Canada
...to show our gratitude, Bush will be sending troops over to "liberate" you (of your oil reserves).

Meanwhile, one of my local GOP astroturfers is mailing LTTEs to every paper in the area, shrieking that the rest of the world isn't doing enough for us.

He knows that's horseshit--I've countered some of his letters--but he has to stick with it: it's a lie, and he's a Republican watching FOX News. He's gotta stand up for what he doesn't believe.

19. Thanks Vancouver S&R
saw them on Dateline tonight. An official in NO thought they were Royal Mounted Police but they were a Vancouver Search and Rescue team. They were going into houses to rescue people. They were great and the only people to show up to help for a long time.

Thanks - :applause:

No need to praise 'a brother,' Bush says
Explains failure to thank Canada ...

Tuesday, September 25, 2001

WASHINGTON -- U.S. President George W. Bush said yesterday that Canada is like "a brother" to the United States, so it shouldn't need public acknowledgment of its efforts since the Sept. 11 terrorist strikes.

Canadians and Americans shouldn't bicker over who snubbed whom when there's a war on terrorism, Mr. Bush said after a meeting at the White House with Prime Minister Jean Chrétien.

... Mr. Bush accused unnamed Canadians of trying to sour relations between the two countries for political gain by harping on his failure to thank Canadians during last Thursday's televised address to a joint session of the U.S. Congress.

When the WTC was attacked, Canada immediately accepted all international flights destined to the US that were diverted from US airspace. At that point, no one knew what was going on -- and what or who might have been on those flights.

Canadians then immediately came forward in all the communities to which the flights were diverted (mainly smaller centres -- my offer was fruitless because the flights were diverted away from where I am -- and especially in Newfoundland, where many people are not high-income but most are extremely hospitable to strangers) to take the USAmerican and other passengers into their homes and look after them until they could proceed.

Bush effusively thanked several countries and their people in his big speech, and said not a word about Canada.

The thing is that he was right about nobody expecting thanks in such situations -- I've said it myself here.

But nobody expects to be disregarded when the thanks are being handed out, particularly in those circumstances. It was the exclusion, not the lack of thanks, that was offensive.

But maybe not as offensive as the days it took for him to acknowledge, let alone officially apologize, as head of state, for the "friendly-fire" killings of Canadian servicepeople in Afghanistan ...
