CAFOD has protested to the Colombian authorities following a violent attack against one of its partner organisations engaged in a peaceful occupation of a sugar estate.
The Associations of Indigenous Cabildos of the Northern Cauca (ACIN) claimed that, on September 5, police had fired on the unarmed occupiers, and had prevented ambulances from taking injured people off the site.
It also says that the police reportedly beat and detained the ACIN administrator, Mauricio Cassio.
The Nasa indigenous communities of the Cauca have long been engaged in a peaceful campaign to recover their traditional lands from landowners and agribusiness. They have won national and international prizes for their development programmes.
