Pakistan president proposes border fence with Afghanistan
Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf today unveiled plans to build a "fence" along the border with Afghanistan to curb the movement of militants bent on destabilising the government in Kabul.

Musharraf floated the proposal during a meeting in New York with US Secretary of State Condeleezza Rice ahead of the UN summit of world leaders.

"The president offered to Dr. Rice that Pakistan is prepared to make a fence along certain areas which are more amenable to incursions," Foreign Minister Khurshid Kasuri told reporters after the meeting.

Kasuri said the proposal was aimed at muting accusations that Pakistan has been sluggish in cracking down on militants linked to Afghan's former Taliban regime.

2. I am sure a fence would survive 72 hrs in the tribal areas.
Paint me skeptical but I am sure that the "holes" wouldn't be discovered for years.

5. Sounds like another Halliburton boondoggle to me
Build, or just say that you built a fence up in the mountains of a "War Zone," anyone here want to go supervise the construction?

And even if they do build it, the maintenance cost will most likely be extremely high.

Sound like a dream job for KBR/Halliburton.

10. it's amazing that fence-builders can make it to the areas that
Pak military can't due to "lawlesseness" and "tribal reasons". Perhaps some of these fence-builders could keep an eye out for that one tall dude we were looking for a while back when the chimp was "concerned about him."

12. Ironic, after so many years of the Berlin Wall...
"fences" are now in vogue. Pakistan > Afghanistan, Israel > Palestinians, U.S. > Mexico.

Pakistan tells US it wants to erect Afghan fence
---------------------
Mon Sep 12, 2005 9:29 PM BST
---------------------
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Fed up with accusations it allows Taliban fighters to cross into Afghanistan, Pakistan offered on Monday to erect a fence between the two countries to prevent incursions from either side.

Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf made the offer during talks in New York with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Pakistani Foreign Minister Khursheed Mehmood Kasuri said after the 75-minute meeting.

(snip)

"Pakistan is prepared to raise a fence so that we can put an end to these allegations," Kasuri told reporters, without specifying exactly where and when a fence could be erected, how long it would be, or who would pay for it.

"Pakistan can do nothing more than that to prevent incursions," he said of proposals for a fence, adding: "We are fed up of people who say we have to do more."

16. That is probably the funniest, silliest suggestion I've heard this week
Like people who travel on foot for absurd distances over brutal terrain in some of the worst GD weather in the world could be cowed by a fence??

And if the fences only exist in "certain areas" these same people wouldn't, if they didn't dig under, simply WALK AROUND??

This sounds like he's pitching bullshit at her, to make it appear that he is "trying" ... and of course she knows it is bullshit, but she pretends it's yummy fudge when anyone asks her about it.

Hey, they gotta make us think they give a rat's ass!!!
