WASHINGTON (CNN) -- U.S. officials say they believe Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, the alleged mastermind of the September 11 attacks, killed Daniel Pearl, The Wall Street Journal reporter who was kidnapped and slain in Pakistan.

Pearl, 38, the newspaper's South Asia bureau chief, was taken hostage in January 2002 and killed. A videotape of the killing was distributed, but the face of the person who slit Pearl's throat cannot be seen.

U.S. officials declined to say why they are convinced that Mohammed killed Pearl. But they point to testimony in the September 2002 trial of some in Pakistan accused of involvement in the case that indicated Mohammed did the killing.

A U.S. official said Mohammed, a prisoner of the CIA at an undisclosed location, will not be tried in the killing "anytime real soon" but could not rule out the possibility at some time in the future. He was captured in March in Pakistan.

There's just one problem. Either the government has lied to us — either last year or now — or Khalid Shaikh Mohammed is the Son of God or somehow otherwise capable of resurrection. As Brenda Stardom points out today it was reported in 2002 that Mohammed was killed in a "frenzied shootout" with Pakistani military, ISI and the FBI. Meanwhile The Memory Hole features two newspaper articles: one from October, 2002 and one from March, 2003. In the first article it is reported that Khalid Mohammed was killed in a shootout with Pakistani police and the FBI. In the second article it is reported that he "was detained by Pakistani authorities this morning and is now in American custody."

Khalid Shaikh Mohammed is either the Second Coming of Christ — and thus capable of resurrection — or our government has been lying to us, either then or now. Did Mohammed die in a shootout with police in Karachi or is he now in US custody? Both can't be true.

Levy was a guest on Bill Moyer's NOW recently, and spoke of staying overnight at the same hotel where Pearl spent his last evening.

He said the place was crawling with ISI.
