3. That should be the new Air Force slogan
"The United States Air Force: Bombing Women and a Few Kids"

Nice ring to it

2. What is the obsession with the Syria border?
The insurgency is an overwhelmingly nationalist, indigenous phenomenon. Is the delusion still that pervasive, or is this just a step toward Cambodia-izing the war?

5. re: afraid
I agree. With *'s poll numbers dropping, the only solution is, WAR, of course. And since Iran is probably too tough of a sell, it's got to be Syria.

7. Look at the Supply line for an Attack on Iran
Right now the US Army is supplied via the PERSIAN GULF. The northern Coast of the Persian Gulf is IRAN. To fully take control of this area is would take weeks AND DIVERT RESOURCES FROM THE MAIN THRUST TO TEHRAN. Thus While the US Army marches on Tehran, the Iranians can attack the US Supply ships (And the US Carriers) in the gulf. Given the lack of oil production in Iraq since the Invasion, any supply of fuel to march on Tehran must come from somewhere, as would the Ammunition, food and other supplies needed for the invasion. The US just can NOT attack Iran without securing its supply lines first.

Now in previous invasions of Iran, the invader came either from the North or the West. A Northern Invasion is out of the question, the US could not supply the army needed, thus an attack from the West (i.e. from Iraq). Thus how do you solve the problem of protecting the supply line? Taking Southern Iran would do the job, but than divert from the main attack to Tehran. The better solution is to take Syria and make Beirut the US supply base. Thus the US Supply lines are protected from air/Missile or Artillery attack (Attacks from the insurgents will increase, but you will have such attacks even if Kuwait was the Base).

Furthermore once you have Syria, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirate, Qatar and most importantly Saudi Arabia could denounce the invasion and than claim that is all they can do to stop it (i.e. Secretly tell Bush it is OK to invade Iran, tell their people the opposite and just do nothing to oppose the war those clearly aiding Bush but will a deniable to their own people).

Thus the increase attack Near the Syrian Border sets up for an Air Attack on Syria for "Supporting Terrorist in Iraq" and than an invasion which stops at Beirut. Thus you have a nice (Through long) overland supply route NOT SUBJECT TO IRANIAN AIR, MISSILE AND ARTILLERY ATTACKS.

8. Israel will attack Iran first, IMHO.
Then we will have the start of WWIII. China, Russia, Iran vs United States and Israel. I think the British would be smart to sit this one out.

U.S. planes strike near Syria border-medical source

RAMADI, Iraq, Sept 13 (Reuters) - U.S. aircraft struck insurgent targets in the Iraqi town of Karabila, near the Syrian border, more than 10 times on Tuesday, a hospital source told Reuters.

"American aircraft have struck the city of Karabila more than 10 times," the source said. A security source added that the Iraqi army also clashed with insurgents at Gumruk, near Karabila, on Tuesday.

The hospital source said families were beginning to leave Karabila after the air strikes and heading for Haditha -- where the U.S. military said earlier on Tuesday it had killed four insurgents and captured another in an air strike on a house.

...

Iraq and the United States complain that arms and fighters are being smuggled across the border with Syria for deployment in cities across Iraq. The Baghdad government closed the Syrian border in places on Sunday.
