CONYERS RELEASE: 4 U.S. House Comms to Vote on Resolutions Demanding Answers on Rove/Plame 'TreasonGate'!

Announcing that it is "time for Congress to exercise its duty to oversee the Executive Branch," the ranking minority member of the U.S. House Judiciary Committee, Rep. John Conyers has just released a press statement announcing that four different U.S. House Committees will be voting on resolutions within the next week to request information on the outing of covert CIA operative, Valerie Plame.

Conyers describes the issue as a matter of "criminal and ethical misconduct" done "for political reasons, to retaliate against the operative's husband for successfully challenging the President's claim that Iraq had sought nuclear materials in Africa."

Conyers also calls former Attorney General John Ashcroft on the carpet for initially dragging his feet on the investigation and for remaining involved in it as it moved forward despite Ashcroft's "long-standing ties to Karl Rove."

I'd wager he's getting plenty of help and staff support "under the table/radar" from other Dems unable to be more public about their disgust.

I have loads of respect for Conyers and his staff, but considering the volumes of stuff and varied theories coming out so quickly (contrasted with the time it took to evaluate and issue reports on the 2004 election, where we can pretty much presume they were on their own) it seems to me that he's getting some help he didn't have before. I imagine that many Dems have interns who are basically on assignment to Conyers until further notice, and that these same Dems are also conferring with those interns in order to give additional insights.

Conyers came out front and took the hits for the 2004 election investigation and survived. By doing so, he proved himself to the left, and by not doing so, the other dems lost credibility with us. They know that we might question their motives if they came out front, but that we won't question Conyers' motives or credibility (with good reason). Also, the Admin has nothing on Conyers after all this time, but some of them may not be so fortunate. So, it makes sense to have Conyers be the point person -- he's the litigator at this point, others are helping to collect evidence, review possible causes of action/investigation, putting together briefs for him to review/argue, etc.

Make no mistake, I'm not saying Conyers is a front. He is very much in control, and he's at the top of a much bigger pyramid than he was way back in Dec and Jan. Once we take back Congress, I see Conyers as being instrumental in restoring the government and restructuring the party -- and he will get (good) paybacks from this. Ultimately, no one will see lending him a hand now as an "owsie" from him to them. They will see (and if they don't immediately, he will make them see) that Conyers' was the one doing the favors here.

Is it possible that the announcement of indictments is imminent? Or is there no connection?

I would tend to think that Conyers would let the criminal matter run its course before initiating a congressional inquiry.
