Associated Press & 13News

(CURRITUCK CO, N.C.) -- Officials in Currituck County declared a state of emergency Tuesday evening and ordered mandatory evacuations for the 4-wheel-drive area of the Currituck Outer Banks starting at 6:00 a.m. Wednesday as Hurricane Ophelia advances on the Carolina coast.

On Tuesday, Dare County issued evacuation orders for Hatteras Island. The order included the villages of Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras.

SHELTERS FOR PETS:

If evacuating, do not leave pets behind. The Dare County Animal Shelter (475-5620) has a list of pet friendly lodging in NC and Virginia. Public health regulations do not allow pets in public shelters.

A storm shelter for pets is being set up by the Onslow County Animal Response Team as county residents prepare for winds and rain from Hurricane Ophelia. It's at Jacksonville Commons Middle School. Owners must check in and stay at the neighboring Red Cross shelter so they can care for the animals.

The NC coast is mostly little beach towns between Wilmington and Va Beach.
