Chavez Says His Bodyguards Denied Visas for U.N. Summit, U.S. Embassy Denies Claim

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said Tuesday that U.S. authorities have denied visas to his security team, hampering his attendance at this week's U.N. summit in New York. U.S. Embassy officials denied Chavez' claim. "The United States is violating international accords ... they denied visas for my security team," said Chavez who has repeatedly accused the U.S. government of backing plots against him.

He said he was still considering whether to go to New York after the visas were allegedly denied for his bodyguards and the military chief of his security detail. He accused the U.S. government of attempting to undermine his participation at the U.N. summit, which begins Wednesday. A spokesman for the U.S. Embassy in Caracas, Brian Penn, denied Chavez' claim, saying the embassy "has not denied any visas to members of the (Venezuelan) delegation going to New York for the U.N. meeting,"

Meanwhile, the Venezuelan leader also accused the U.S. authorities of allegedly changing "at the last minute" the location where his plane was supposed to land. He called the move "intervention" in Venezuela's affairs. Chavez said the alleged visa denials were particularly disturbing given the recent suggestion by American religious broadcaster Pat Robertson that he should be killed.

Robertson said last month that the United States should "take him (Chavez) out" because the Venezuelan president, a close ally of Cuban leader Fidel Castro, poses a danger to the region. Robertson later apologized. Chavez has repeatedly accused the U.S. government of backing a short-lived 2002 coup against him, and recently alleged that Washington was preparing an invasion on his South American nation - a key oil producer. U.S. officials have denied the claims as ridiculous.

9. Similar thing happened a few years ago. Hugo was set to come

and at the last minute he cancelled because he found out there was a threat against his life. Can't remember if it was for the UN or something else, but at the time Hugo was pissed. Someone else might remember the details.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez last week called on the United States to crack down on what he described as Cuban and Venezuelan terrorists training in Florida to kill him.

Last week Chavez canceled a planned trip to the United States because of security threats.

Meanwhile a recent report in US News and World Reports tiled “Terror Close to Home” charges that Venezuela is emerging as “a potential hub of terrorism in the Western Hemisphere.” The article claims Chavez has provided assistance to Islamic fundamentalists.

The magazine claims that Venezuela has given social security-like cards to thousands of foreigners including many from Middle Eastern nations including Syria, Pakistan, Egypt and Lebanon. The U.S. government has warned that by giving out these ID documents, terrorists could more easily obtain Venezuelan passports and U.S. visas.

US News and World Reports also claims that US intelligence officials are investigating whether a Venezuelan of Arab descent named Hakim Mamad al Diab Fatah had ties to any of the Sept. 11 hijackers. One official described him as a person of interest.

The article goes on to claim close ties between Chavez’s government and the Columbian rebel group FARC.

...While the United States. as host country for the United Nations, is obliged to give visas to foreign officials for official UN business, a US official said the conference of parliamentarians was not a UN affair even though it used UN facilities.

...The Cuban delegation was also denied visas to attend the first World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, held in New York in 2000, Requeijo Gual said.

Maria Corina Machado blows independent cover on Pat Robertson's TV show

Shortly before Reverend Pat Robertson uttered his " take- out- Chavez" commentary, a number of Venezuelan opposition personalities appeared on his T V show.

Venezuelan website www.aporrea.org says Venezuelan opposition shadow National Elections Council (CNE) group, Sumate leader, Maria Corina Machado told Robertson's audience that there was no freedom of expression in Venezuela and its prisons are full of political prisoners.

Other opposition figures appearing on Robertson's shows were: Globovision presenter, Leopoldo Castillo and former Ambassador to Cuba under President Luis Herrera Campins, Alfredo Taylhardat.

Machado hyped up the 400 Club audience claiming that she could face prison herself for receiving funds from the USA to educate people in Venezuela about their electoral rights.

CARACAS, Venezuela (Reuters) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez on Tuesday accused the U.S. government of trying to interfere in his visit to the U.N. General Assembly in New York by denying visas to his personal security detail and his medical team.

Chavez, an ally of Communist Cuba who frequently accuses Washington of trying to assassinate him, said he was still considering whether to visit the United States this week to take part in the world body's 60th anniversary summit.

"They threaten to kill me from there and then deny visas to my closest security team who have been with me for years ... they deny my medical team their visas, I'm going to have to walk around the Big Apple by myself," Chavez said.

"Without a doubt they are interfering," he said during a ceremony to sign deals with a Chinese delegation.
