KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) - Police arrested more than 300 people - including top opposition leaders - during a protest Tuesday that drew thousands of people demanding the restoration of democracy in Nepal.
About three dozen people were hurt, hospital officials said, when police beat them with bamboo batons in an attempt to disperse the crowd of more than 6,000 protesters who had gathered in the centre of the capital, Kathmandu. Some people sustained head injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Police dragged about 300 protesters to police vans and trucks and drove them to detention centres.
The rally, led by top opposition leaders from Nepal's seven largest political parties, moved into the city centre despite a government ban on gatherings there. The protesters broke through police lines, chanting slogans demanding a return to democracy. <snip>
